Although a small number of students have been treated by the SHSU Student Health Center for flu-like symptoms, there have been no confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus.
“We are seeing a normal amount of students with typical illnesses such as mono, strep throat, colds, upper respiratory infections, and those with seasonal allergies,” said Dr. Tom Hill, Health Center physician. “We are doing well for a fall semester. Despite the rumors, we have not seen any indications of an H1N1 epidemic on campus.”
The vaccine for the H1N1 virus is on order and the Student Health Center will notify the university community once it is available. Each member of the SHSU community can slow the spread of communicable diseases, such as H1N1, by practicing good hygiene and staying away from others when sick.
The SHSU Student Health Center will administer the seasonal influenza vaccine free of charge to students on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 23-24, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and to employees on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, from 9 a.m-4 p.m. in the LSC Atrium. Students and employees must present their ID cards prior to receiving the vaccine. The vaccine is not available through the Health Center for students who are pregnant or nursing. Students 17 years of age or younger must present a parental consent prior to receiving the vaccine.
Supplies are limited and the Health Center will administer the vaccine on a first come-first serve basis. In the past, the department has accommodated everyone that requested the vaccine. However, the Health Center anticipates an increased level of interest in the vaccine this year. Consequently, both students and employees are advised to obtain the vaccine through other means if they have the opportunity.

"I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
