The SHSU Alcohol & Drug Abuse Initiative will present the Third Annual Alcohol Summit on Nov. 7.
The summit was originally scheduled Sept. 12-13, but was re-scheduled because of Hurricane Ike.
The purpose of the summit is to educate the university community about risky alcohol consumption as well as the legal and social ramifications of irresponsible choices.
The summit is open to all students, faculty, staff and community members and is designed to offer information about alcohol and other substance abuse through a series of educational sessions.
Among the topics which will be are rape aggression defense tactics, bicycle safety, alcohol screenings, the cost of alcohol abuse for college students, SHSU’s disciplinary process for alcohol offenses, the legal process for offenses, the chemistry of alcohol and how alcohol affects the body, and sex, alcohol and drugs.
Also on hand will be the Phoummarath family of Houston, whose son, Jack, died from alcohol poisoning three years ago during a fraternity initiation ceremony at the University of Texas. They will discuss the dangers of hazing and binge drinking and how their lives have been affected by Jack’s death.
The keynote speaker is Erica Upshaw. She and her brother, Joey, were “All-American” kids, made good grades and were campus leaders. But a deadly combination of drugs and alcohol changed Erica’s life forever. She now travels to universities warning students about the dangers of believing that partying in college is an entitlement and automatic part of the university experience.
Students who attend the summit are able to earn co-curricular transcript credit and will have the opportunity to win prizes either as an individual or for their student organizations.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
