SHSU’s Texas Omicron chapter of Alpha Chi has continued to shine bright throughout the semester, with recognitions for both the chapter and its members during the regional convention and 50 inductees for the year.
During the Region I and II Conference held at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin in March, music major Irving Ray received the Gaston Region II Scholarship and the Texas Omicron chapter was recognized with the “Star Chapter Award.”
“The Star Award is given for those chapters that have done an outstanding job, and have participated in different activities throughout the year,” said faculty adviser Patricia Williams.
At the conference, Ray played variations of “The Yellow Rose of Texas” on his euphonium, and Alpha Chi members Ashley Valdez, James Deveau and Dominic Pollone were also a part of the program.
In April, Ray was awarded the Nolle Scholarship for $1,500 by the Alpha Chi National Council scholarship committee. Because of this the Gaston scholarship will be given to the alternate “because an individual cannot receive the money for both awards in the same year,” Williams said.
In addition, the chapter inducted 50 new members during a ceremony on April 17 at The Junction restaurant, during which Pollone presented “Till Tomorrow,” which addressed ways to combat stress in one’s life; and Ray, who also received the $500 local scholarship, played his guitar and sang.
Spring inductees include Megan E. Barfield, Jordan C. Bilnoski, Melissa Burnham, Ashley Marie Clark, Rebecca M. Clayden, Bridget M. Costello, An Ngoc Dang, James Daniel Deveau, Angela N. Doerfler, Dee Anne Ellwood, Jennifer Ashley Fox and Jessica Lynn Geyer.
Also, Mitchell Wayne Graff, Shannon Marie Horton, Matala David Idi, David Jamison, Jennifer Johnson, Meeta Lulla, Leslie A. Mooney, Ashton M. Mouton, Jennifer Nicholson, and Brittany Nitsche.
Also, Lauren S. Othold, Sarah Perzan, Dominic A. Pollone, Lisa G. Prier, Rebecca T. Ramirez, Jason L. Randall, Caryn J. Rasberry, Irving Paul Ray, Herman C. Schramm IV, Erin M. Smith, Bridgette A. Snow and Rachel N. Snyder.
And, finally, Cordell Spears, Josh Starkey, Kyle Moses Trout, Brad A. Turner, Chelsea Lee Updegraff, Chris Webb, Eric Weesner, Kimberly K. Wiley, Gary M. Williams, Jamie Katherine Wood, Jadrian Wooten and Paula Wyatt.
This year's officers include Valdez, president; Deveau, president-elect; Othold, secretary; Lulla, treasurer; Smith, historian; and Mouton, webmaster.
Membership to Alpha Chi is limited to students with a combined grade point average of 3.7 as a junior and 3.6 as a senior.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
