Students in the department of biological sciences at Sam Houston State University are making a valuable investment in their future by participating in the undergraduate research program.
“Unlike other schools of the same stature, Sam Houston State University is providing abundant research opportunities for undergraduates. Several students majoring in biology have become involved in the research program for a competitive edge when applying for graduate school and pursuing professional jobs,” said Raelynn Deaton, assistant professor of biology.
Biological sciences’ research faculty is supported by a group of eager undergraduates.
Anne Gaillard, assistant professor of biology, has five undergraduates conducting cell biology research in her lab. Gaillard considers research an important aspect because it gives students first-hand experience.
“From my perspective, most students who participate in research become passionate about science, and the experience ends up being very rewarding for them,” said Gaillard.
In addition to gaining practical experience, students who participate in this program may also earn academic credit for their research in the form of an independent research course.
“Research has strengthened my performance in the classroom by enhancing my critical thinking skills,” said undergraduate Samir Rosado.
The dedication and hard work of each student in the research program has given Sam Houston State University distinction in respect to research.
Many of them have been acknowledged by scientists from various academic institutions for their presentations and achievements at local and international conferences, including the Texas Branch of the American Society of Microbiology, Texas Academy of Science, Southwestern Association of Naturalists, and the Third European Conference for Poeciliid Biologists.
“Students who do research, present at meetings and contribute to the publication process enhance their oral and written communication skills, which will benefit their futures no matter what career path they take,” said Chad Hargrave, assistant professor of biology.
The department’s goal is to foster an interest and enthusiasm for pursuing graduate studies in biology and careers in research.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
