Second Grant Given To SHSU For Traveling Technological Station

go station Sam Houston State University has been given a second grant for the Go Kats Go Center.

The Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corporation, a non-profit organization out of Round Rock, gave $79,250 as part of its Public Grant Benefit Program.

The grant from the corporation will allow the Enrollment Management Division to purchase four additional laptops, cover fuel and maintenance costs, and to hire a go center counselor.

“The grant will help continue and build upon what has already been established from the first year of the program,” said Susan Houston, enrollment management specialist who is in charge of the Go Kats Go Center.

Representatives of Sam Houston State University travel around Texas throughout the semester to high school football games, county fairs and other community events to promote higher education.

“Our main concern is to go out and reach first generation college students and students at high schools with low college attendance,” said Houston.

“We help the students by showing them how to apply for financial aid and begin the general application process,” said Houston. “We have also started to keep in contact with the students we help through e-mail, and we hope that by establishing this personal contact with them, that they keep Sam Houston State in mind when applying for college.”

The Go Kats Go Center began traveling in the fall semester of 2007. The Enrollment Management Division is continuing its efforts this fall with visits to the San Antonio, Austin and Conroe areas.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
