An Orange Mind Is A Spirited Mind For Homecoming

Homecoming LogoSam Houston State University will be in "An Orange State of Mind"’ for Homecoming 2008 when the celebration begins on Oct. 13.


Festivities will open with a disc jockey and free giant cookies during the “Homecoming Kick Off Rally” at noon on Monday in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.

SHSU cheerleaders, the Orange Pride dance team and Sammy the Bearkat will be present to help spread the “Orange spirit,” along with the introduction of the 2008 Homecoming King and Queen nominees.


On Wednesday (Oct. 15), Student Activities will host the annual “SamJam Carnival” at 8 p.m. in the Holleman Field Parking Lot. Numerous rides and attractions, including a giant Ferris wheel and plenty of free food, will be on hand for all to enjoy. The highlight of the night will be the announcement of the finalist for the Homecoming King and Queen.


Then on Thursday (Oct. 16), Sam Houston Avenue will become a river of lights as countless floats designed by student and community organizations and university departments are showcased with university administrators, distinguished alumni, congressmen, and other government officials in attendance for the 2008 Homecoming Parade. The parade starts at 6:30 p.m.


Friday, (Oct. 17) will be filled with various activities for everyone to take part in, such as the “Golden Circle Reunion,” honoring the Class of 1958, in the LSC Ballroom at 11 a.m. and a “Special Movie Premiere” hosted by Student Activities at the Cinestar of Huntsville at 1 p.m.


Also on Friday, Alumni Relations will host the Distinguished Alumni Gala in the LSC Ballroom.


Five Sam Houston State University graduates who have made notable contributions in business and education, as well as to the university, will be honored at 7 p.m., with a reception beginning at 6 p.m. This year’s honorees include Eleanor Paxton Smith Garrett, Jimmie Gibbs-Munroe, John R. Ragsdale, George C. Yax and Quatro E. Brooks.


To cap off the weeklong Homecoming celebration, there will be plenty to do on Saturday, (Oct. 18) starting with the Raven Kids One-Mile Fun Run at 7:30 a.m. at the Intramural Field and the Raven 5K Race and One-Mile Walk beginning at the Health and Kinesiology Center at 8 a.m.


Later on Saturday, the President’s Office will be hosting “Pre-Game with the President” at 11 a.m. in Austin Hall.


That afternoon, Bearkat fans are encouraged to show their school spirit at the tailgate party at Bearkat Alley, at the north end of Bowers Stadium, beginning at noon. Free food and giveaways will be available on behalf of Alumni Relations and countless student organizations. The tailgate party will be followed by the SHSU football game with the Bearkats taking on McNeese State at 2 p.m.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

 

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
