Local children will have the opportunity to get their pictures taken with several mascot “celebrities” prior to the Sam Houston State University homecoming parade on Thursday (Oct. 16).

Clutch the Bear from the Houston Rockets, Haley the Comet from the Houston Comets, Junction Jack from the Houston Astros, Sammy the Bearkat, and BB the Hornet from Huntsville High School will be in front of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum at 5:30 p.m. for free photos.

The homecoming parade begins at 6:30 p.m. Lineup for floats and other parade participants will begin at 5:30 p.m. on 19th Street.

Over 50 entries will proceed down Sam Houston Avenue to the Courthouse before turning east on 12th Street, then south on University Avenue where the parade will disburse at Midway Plaza.

In addition to the celebrity mascots, participants include Miss Texas USA Brooke Daniels, the SHSU homecoming court, the Bearkat Marching Band, the Cut-N-Shoot Harley Davidson motorcycle group, Congressman Kevin Brady, and floats representing numerous student and community organizations.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
