"The measure of a Life is its Service."
Paul Ruffin, distinguished professor of English at Sam Houston State University and a highly respected editor, publisher, writer and poet, has been named a "Regents' Professor" by the Texas State University System Board of Regents.
The board recognized Ruffin, along with Max Warshauer, professor of mathematics at Texas State University-San Marcus, and Jean Andrews, professor of deaf studies and deaf education at Lamar University, at their regular quarterly meeting in Huntsville on Friday.
The professors were honored with the system’s highest faculty award for exemplary performance and contributions in teaching, research and publication.
The text of a resolution honoring Ruffin reads:
Whereas, the Board of Regents of the Texas State University System has determined that it would advance the cause of higher education in the State of Texas and contribute to the public good of the state to create the Office of Regents’ Professor; and,
Whereas, the purpose of the Office is to recognize exceptional and outstanding members of the professoriate who have achieved excellence in teaching, research and publication, and community service; demonstrating in performance of their duties, an unwavering dedication to their students, universities and communities; and,
Whereas, the Office of Regents’ Professor is a lifetime designation bestowed by the Board of Regents upon tenured faculty members who have been acknowledged by their peers and students as exceptional, and recommended by the Texas State University System Foundation Board of Directors, the Chancellor and the University President; and,
Whereas, Paul Ruffin, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of English, has achieved such excellence by his outstanding achievements in founding and serving as Director of The Texas Review Press and serving as Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of The Texas Review, writing and editing over 24 books, both fiction and nonfiction, over 800 poems, numerous essays and reviews, a weekly newspaper column and feature news stories, and initiating the Creative Writing program at Sam Houston State University; and,
Whereas, Dr. Ruffin has obtained national prestige and prominence in literary circles, recognition through numerous awards and appreciation for unwavering commitment and distinguished service to Sam Houston State University; and,
Whereas, Dr. Ruffin through his sense of humor, cultivation of the creative and intellectual abilities of his students, his gift of storytelling, and ability to gain the admiration and affection of his colleagues, students and a national audience; and,
Whereas, Paul Ruffin, Ph.D., by his qualities of mind and character, has brought great honor to Sam Houston State University, the Texas State University System, and the Great State of Texas;
Now, Therefore Be It Resolved on this 21st day of November, 2008, that Paul Ruffin, Ph.D. be designated a Regents’ Professor and forever hold said title, including all honors, rights and privileges appurtenant thereto.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
