The Office of Multicultural and International Student Services will bring some “UniDiversity” to campus beginning Monday (Sept. 28) with a week of activities designed to educate students on different aspects of religious awareness.
“This semester ‘Religions Around The World’ will focus on religious tolerance, which is especially important given the political and cultural clashes we see on the news every day,” said Ashley McDonough, MISS program coordinator.
“It is important for college students today to learn about the world outside of what they might be used to,” she said. “There are so many cultures and beliefs that make up the world's cultures and it is important of be aware of those things as educated college students.”
“Religion and Food” will kick off the week of events on Monday, during which students can learn more about the five major religions practiced around the world, from noon until 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.
“The program gives students the chance to taste an example of traditionally ‘halal’ prepared food, which is a very important part of the Islamic religious tradition and something that a lot of SHSU student may never have had the chance to try before,” McDonough said. “The foods we will serve will include humus, pita bread, salad and vegetables.”
On Tuesday, Students on a Quest for Unity and Diversity will discuss their original presentation “Loosing your Religion” from 3-4 p.m. in LSC Room 304.
“The presentation focuses on educating students about little-known, but interesting facts from various world religions,” McDonough said. “It will conclude with an open and positive discussion among audience participants in relation to religions around the world, social stereotypes, as well as the personal beliefs of the audiences participants.”
On Wednesday, guest speaker Christian de la Huerta, a best-selling author, will present “Beyond Belief: The Importance of Religious Diversity in Today’s World,” from 6-8 p.m. in the LSC Theatre.
“In this informative and challenging presentation, Huerta combines his studies of and personal experience with various religious traditions to present a message both timely and important,” according to the CAMPUSSPEAK Web site, an agency that represents college speakers nationwide.
Finally, on Thursday, the “Think Tank Breakfast” will focus on bringing students together to discuss the week and brainstorm programs to increase education of different cultures on campus.
“We encourage feedback from students about programs they would like to see from MISS and how we can continue providing new and unique events for the SHSU community,” said McDonough.
The free breakfast will be served from 10-11 a.m. in LSC Room 307.
