Beta Gamma Sigma, an international business honor fraternity, will host a banquet and induction ceremony next Tuesday (March 24) at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.
The president of Beta Gamma Sigma, George Stevens, will present the Beta Gamma Sigma Medallion For Entrepreneurship to Texas State University System Board of Regents member Charlie Amato and Gary Dudley.
“The Beta Gamma Sigma Medallion For Entrepreneurship is awarded to outstanding individuals who combine innovative business achievement with service to humanity. The accomplishments of these individuals must be consistent with the ideals of Beta Gamma Sigma,” said associate professor of accounting Elsie Ameen.
Amato and Dudley both serve on the Sam Houston State University College of Business Administration advisory board and were recently inducted into the SHSU College of Business Hall of Honor. Both have been inducted into the San Antonio Business Hall of Fame and have also been named Distinguished Alumni by Sam Houston State University. Amato received this honor in 2001 and Dudley in 2004.
Amato has been named one of the “Most Influential San Antonians” and “Humanitarian of the Year” by the Arthritis Foundation.
Dudley serves on the President’s Circle at SHSU.
Beta Gamma Sigma will also recognize two “Chapter Honorees,” Bud Haney and Jill Vaughan, who have achieved distinction primarily in business and administration, according to Ameen.
Haney is the co-founder and president of Profiles International. He serves on the College of Business advisory council at SHSU. He has been inducted into the College of Business Hall of Honor and recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by SHSU.
Vaughan is senior vice president/commercial sending manager for Montgomery County. She has extensive experience in the banking industry.
In addition, she is a trustee for the Montgomery Independent School District; chairman of the College of Business Advisory Council and a member of the Banking Business Board at SHSU.
Eighty-one students will also be inducted into the organization. These students are in the top 7 percent of the junior class, top 10 percent of the senior class and top 20 percent of the master’s class.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
