Conference To Attract Statisticians From Around South

The Sam Houston State University department of mathematics and statistics will host the 29th annual Conference of Texas Statisticians beginning on Friday (March 27) at 8:30 a.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater, and Saturday (March 28) at 8:30 a.m. in Lee Drain Building Room 214.

The conference offers statisticians across Texas and neighboring states an opportunity to meet for an intellectual and social exchange. Presenters will address both theoretical and applied statistical topics including monitoring of drug trials, cancer prevention, disease classification, and gene expression.

Some of the professors presenting include Texas A&M professor William B. Smith, speaking on statistical professionalism and ethics; University of Texas Southwestern Medical School associate professor Linda Hynan, speaking on biostatistical issues in clinical trials; and Louisiana State University professor Lynne LaMotte, speaking on a clarification of type III hypotheses in multi-factor models.

In addition, 15 students from the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs will compete in a research poster competition.

The San Antonio Chapter of the American Statistical Association will also award the national Don Owen Award Friday evening. The winner is selected on the basis of accomplishments in research, statistical consultation, and service to the statistical community.
