The Sam Houston State University Staff Council, in conjunction with the city of Huntsville’s Solid Waste Services, will celebrate Earth Day by giving the campus and community the opportunity to recycle their used goods.
Earth Day @ Sam will be held on April 22 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area, sponsored by the SHSU Staff Council’s campus enhancement committee.
“The campus enhancement committee really wants to let the university’s environment know that we are here and are interested in the enhancement of our campus,” said India Love with the accounts payable department.
In her interest in improving the campus environment, Staff Council chair Terri Harvey came up with the event idea.
Recycling bins will be set up through out the morning and afternoon for bottles, plastics, cans, newspapers and paper.
“It’s wonderful to see trash renewed into something that is beautiful or something that could be used again,” said Love. “I feel that the recycling industry in the future will provide so many new jobs for our country. It also helps the environment greatly.”
The vending department on campus handles university recycling. Bins are located across campus for computer paper, newspapers and magazines. Aluminum cans and toner cartridges are also included in the recycling program.
The student staff is on call and available to pick up recyclables during any business day.
“We aren’t in it for the money. We just want to keep trash from being thrown into the landfill,” said vending manager Marlin Birdwell.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
