H1N1 Update, Seasonal Flu Vaccine Available

September 10, 2009

With news of the H1N1 virus reported at other university campuses, the Sam Houston State University Division of Student Services has issued a statement for students, faculty and staff:

“The flu season will soon be here, and the Student Health Center has already reported seeing a couple of SHSU students exhibiting flu-like symptoms. This is somewhat unusual for this time of the year. Please be personally proactive in practicing good hygiene, and contact your health care provider if you begin to experience flu-like symptoms yourself and forward any student concerns to the Student Health Center staff. For updates on the flu or other campus health situations, please go to the Student Health Center Web site.”

The SHSU Student Health Center will administer the seasonal influenza vaccine free of charge to students on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 23-24, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. and to employees on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, from 9 a.m-4 p.m. in the LSC Atrium. Students and employees must present their ID cards prior to receiving the vaccine. The vaccine is not available through the Health Center for students who are pregnant or nursing. Students 17 years of age or younger must present a parental consent prior to receiving the vaccine.

Supplies are limited and the Health Center will administer the vaccine on a first come-first serve basis. In the past, the department has accommodated everyone that requested the vaccine. However, the Health Center anticipates an increased level of interest in the vaccine this year. Consequently, both students and employees are advised to obtain the vaccine through other means if they have the opportunity.

The availability of the H1N1 vaccine is unknown at this time. The Health Center will inform the university community should it become available.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
