"The measure of a Life is its Service."
While the rest of the country watches from their television, the SHSU Political Science Junior Fellows will witness the historic 2009 presidential inauguration first hand this week in Washington, D.C.
The organization will embark on a six-day trip Saturday (Jan. 17) that will take them through 10 states, culminating in the attendance at the 2009 presidential inauguration of the first African American President in United States history, which will be held on Tuesday (Jan. 20).
"This is a chance to see history in the making," said Megan Bryant, Political Science Junior Fellows president.
Bryant, Blake Roach, Justin Veillon, and Chris Rahlwes will all take the 46-hour road trip with junior fellow faculty adviser Mike Yawn.
“I’m excited about the historic value of this experience,” said Roach. “It’s a wonderful opportunity. It’s especially interesting because the trip builds on some of the organization’s previous trips (to such places as Brown v. Board of Education Museum, Little Rock Central High, and the National Civil Rights Museum.) We feel very fortunate to be part of this process."
While on the trip, the students will have their experiences read by others, documenting each of their encounters in an SHSU blog featured on KBTX.com, the Web site of Bryan/College Station’s Channel 3. The blog can be found under "The Brazos Valley Goes to Washington, D.C." and will give the media audience up-to-date information regarding the inauguration as well as the other historical sites visited by the junior fellows.
Along with being part of this historical event, the junior fellows will visit several other historical sites along the way, including the site of the Huey Long assassination, the Martin Luther King, Jr. gravesite, Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, and the major monuments and memorials in Washington, D.C.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
