The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative at Sam Houston State University will host Reducing Irresponsible Drinking and Drugs week Monday (March 2) through Friday (March 6).
RIDD Week is designed to show students the effects of drugs and alcohol. It is conveniently the week before spring break and for good reason, according to Lisa Joyner, ADAI assistant.
“RIDD Week is important for students to come out and see the consequences of alcohol and drugs and what can happen to them if they are not careful,” Joyner said.
Students can jump start RIDD Week by cleaning their closets, drawers, and cars out for items that promote drugs and alcohol and bring them to the ADAI Swap Meet in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in exchange for great prizes.
Later that day, there will be a chili cook-off at Colony Park where students can create their ideal chili from 2-5 p.m. Students, student organizations, and university divisions must register to enter into the Chili Cook-off by March 1 at the Recreational Sports department Web site, at www.shsu.edu/~rca_www/.
Tuesday, students are invited to start the day off in the LSC Mall Area between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for “Don’t Get Roped In—Bull-ony” where students can see the effects of alcohol by wearing beer goggles against someone who has made the choice to rodeo sober.
While that’s going on, students can bring their alcohol promoting items to another Swap Meet in the LSC Mall Area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. before learning the signs and symptoms of alcohol poisoning and how to prevent an alcohol overdose. “Flask Not What You Can Do” will be held in the Health and Kinesiology Center Atrium from 2:30-5 p.m.
To end the day, students can head to the Bearkats vs. Rice baseball game, where the first 200 students will receive a free T-shirt and can enter to win a special give away, Joyner said.
On Wednesday, students can learn about making good decisions with alcohol, sex and drugs on the “yellow brick road” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area. While they are already there, they can stay and learn the facts and skills needed to ensure safe and healthy relationships from 1-2:30 p.m.
That evening, students are invited to stick around and “Have a Ball” at Bearkat basketball vs. Northwestern State University at 7 p.m. At halftime, students can see a game of “drunken musical chairs” and win free RIDD shirts.
On Thursday, students can talk with legal experts, such as the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and local law enforcement officials, who will teach students about their rights, Breathalyzer tests, and the consequences of MIPs, DUIs, DWIs, and PIs, along with other alcohol and drug related misdemeanors and felonies, in the LSC Mall Area from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
On Friday, students can stop by the Student Activities Smart Cart anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area and build a personal spring break smart kit with items that will prepare them for a healthy holiday.
