To streamline the process for grant acquisition and administration at Sam Houston State University, some changes have been made in administrative reporting channels for grant-related activity.
The office of research administration (formerly contracts and grants) is now reporting directly to the provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective April 1, where the office of research and special programs currently reports.
Each office will be headed by an associate vice president for academic affairs. Dan Davis has been promoted to associate vice president for research administration and technology commercialization, and Jerry Cook will continue to serve as associate vice president for research and special programs.
“I am delighted to see the post-award office move to report to academic affairs and Dan Davis be promoted to direct research administration and technology commercialization,” said David Payne, provost and vice president for academic affairs.
“I believe this change, which was supported by the division of finance and operations and the president, will make a major improvement in integrating pre-award and post-award activities and promote and encourage quality research on the SHSU campus,” he said.
According to Cook, his area promotes research activity and helps faculty find grants to match the research they are conducting. In addition, his office is involved with strategic planning, development, institutional funding, technical assistance, proofreading submissions, and requests for proposals.
“Major universities that are known for their research activities operate this way,” Cook said of the new arrangement. “We now have enough research going on at Sam Houston State University that we needed to take this step.”
Davis, a CPA with more than 25 years in business administration at institutions of higher education and related non-profit organizations, is involved from the proposal stage of a grant through the end of the project.
“Among the things my area handles are the initial routing of the proposal, budget preparation, the negotiation of contracts, expenditure compliance, billing and collection, ensuring that all the technical and financial deliverables are met, and that reports are filed,” Davis said.
Davis came to SHSU as director of contract and grants in 2008. From 1985-2001, he served as executive vice-president and chief financial officer of the Houston Advanced Research Center and president of HARC, Technologies Inc. where he managed the development of a collaborative research campus including overseeing the design, development and administrative infrastructure for the center.
He also served as associate vice president and executive director of technology development at the University of Oklahoma where he promoted the transfer of university technology from the Norman, Health Sciences Center, and Tulsa campuses and organized and negotiated targeted collaborations between universities, industry and government.
At this time Cook’s office will remain in the Roy Adams House on campus and Davis’s office is in room 208 of the Bobby K. Marks Administration Building.
