SHSU To Redesign Web Site

Work is taking place this summer at Sam Houston State University on the redesign of the university’s Web site.

The redesign of the Web site, spearheaded by the SHSU Marketing Office, is part of an overall effort to better tell the SHSU story, according to university officials.

“When people hear or think of Sam Houston State University, we want those thoughts to be positive and powerful,” said Ann O’Meara, director of marketing. “Our Web site redesign helps in this effort.”

Stamats, a university-focused marketing company based in Iowa, was selected to redesign the Web site by an SHSU committee chaired by O’Meara and comprised of Frank Holmes, vice president for university advancement; Heather Crowson, vice president for enrollment management; Keri Rogers, assistant vice president for academic affairs; Mark Adams, associate vice president for information resources; and Thelma Mooney, executive director of development.

A “discovery visit” took place on May 15 when over 100 faculty, administrators and students, including members of the President’s Cabinet and the Alumni Executive Committee, interacted with Brenda Harms, Stamats project manager, and Josh Carrolhawk, Stamats interactive strategist.

“Branding is more than a look or a logo; it is the total of the words, images, ideas and emotions associated with your university,” said Harms.

The second visit by the Stamats team was June 2-3 and was devoted to the creative and writing aspects of the Web site redesign.

“Again, over 100 opinions were solicited and an extensive campus tour allowed the Stamats team to experience our beautiful campus, learn about our faculty, curriculum, tradition and culture,” said O’Meara.

SHSU community opinions and a continuing discussion are taking place at samhoustonstate.blogspot.com. Comments can also be mailed to O’Meara at anneo@shsu.edu.

The Web site redesign is scheduled to debut at the Faculty/Staff General Meeting on Aug. 27 and will be presented by SHSU President Jim Gaertner. The site has a target date of “going live” between the middle and end of October.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
