Ullrich Honored With Agricultural Educator Award

 

Doug Ullrich was presented the Outstanding Agricultural Educator Award by the Southern Region of the American Association for Agricultural Education (AAAE). The award was announced this past February at the organization’s annual meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Ullrich is a professor in the department of agricultural and industrial sciences at Sam Houston State University.

The Outstanding Agricultural Educator Award is given annually “to members for distinguished service and superior contributions to the field of agricultural education,” according to the AAAE Web site.

Candidates of the award must possess excellence in teaching, significant research in agricultural education, scholarly writings, exemplary services rendered to the college, community, agricultural education, state, nation or internationally, as well as professionalism.

Dwayne Pavelock, associate professor in the department of agriculture and industrial sciences, nominated Ullrich for the award.

“Doug possesses an exceptional level of knowledge regarding agricultural education a the local, state, and national levels...and by using a variety of methodologies, Dr. Ullrich is able to promote learning among students of all learning abilities and styles,” Pavelock said.

Ullrich has taught at Sam Houston State University since 1996.

He received a Bachelor of Science in agricultural education and a Master of Agricultural Education from Texas A&M University. He later received a Doctor of Education degree from Oklahoma State University.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
