Services Set For Professor Emeritus Long

Memorial services for Professor Emeritus and former biological sciences department head James D. Long, 83, will be held at Huntsville Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday (March 7) at 2 p.m.

Long was born in Rusk, on September 23, 1925, to John M. and Maudess Holcomb Long.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Garrett Long. Surviving are sister, Maudelia (Clifford) Trevathan of Lufkin, sister-in-law Heloise Long (Harlan) Castles of Smithville, four nephews, three nieces, ten great nephews and nieces and six great-great nephews and nieces.

Long received a two-year degree from Lon Morris College in Jacksonville; Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in biology from Sam Houston State Teachers College; and his doctorate in zoology from the University of Texas at Austin.

His teaching career began in Groveton, and he later taught biology at Lamar Institute of Technology in Beaumont. After completing his doctorate, he served as an associate professor of biology at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Ill. He returned to Texas in 1959 as an associate professor of biology at Sam Houston State Teachers College, and later served as department director from 1961 to 1972.

Long retired from Sam Houston State University in 1999, at which time he was named Professor Emeritus for his many accomplishments in the biological sciences and in science education.

The James D. Long Biology Endowment continues to provide scholarships to deserving students at Sam Houston State University.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
