SHSU Gets In The Spirit WIth 'Orange Crush'

Orange Crush logoSam Houston State University is crushing “casual Fridays” with a version that will promote school spirit while offering participants incentives to don orange and white.

Through “Orange Crush,” an enhancement to the casual spirit Fridays formerly promoted across campus, the Department of Student Activities will reward students, faculty and staff members who wear school colors between 10 a.m. and noon on Fridays by handing out random “orange-themed” prizes in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area beginning this Friday (Jan. 30).

Once a month, the department will also hand out T-shirts.

"This is a great way to foster Bearkat spirit and to remind the SHSU community of where we come from and the wonderful university that we are associated with," said Brandon Cooper, Student Activities manager. "By wearing orange and white or SHSU attire, you really are making a statement about how proud you are to be a Bearkat."

The initiative will also encourage offices to get in the spirit through a competition between university offices and departments that calls for them to submit pictures of themselves in their favorite Bearkat/orange and white gear.

Monthly winners will receive a trophy and will be eligible for the “Most Spirited” of the semester award, a larger, roaming trophy to display in the office for the next semester.

Pictures should be sent to Cooper, at brandon@shsu.edu, and will be selected the second Friday of each month beginning Feb. 13. The submission deadline will be noon on the second Friday of every month.

"We want to show that orange and white is the new black; it goes with everything," Cooper said.

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
