The third annual Kats for the Cause/Pink Out event to promote breast cancer awareness and education will take place Saturday (Nov. 14) at Sam Houston State University.
The event is sponsored by SHSU in conjunction with Zeta Tau Alpha women’s fraternity.
The day’s activities will begin with a 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk at the Bowers Stadium west parking lot. Registration opens at 7:15 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
There is a $20 registration fee, and all participants must register to participate in race activities. Refreshments will be provided and an award presentation will take place immediately following the race. To register online prior to the race, go to www.shsu.edu/katsforthecause. At noon, there will be Kats For The Cause/Pink Out tent at tailgating activities prior to the SHSU football games where refreshments will be served and educational materials about different types of cancer will be available.
At 2 p.m., Bearkat fans are encouraged to wear pink to “pink out” Bowers Stadium and show their support for the fight against breast cancer as Sam Houston State takes on Central Arkansas.
Four breast cancer survivors will serve as honorary co-captains and will go on the field for the coin toss prior to kick-off. They include Teresa Triplett of Cypress, Carol Schmidt of Yancey, Sandra Brassard of Spring, and Linda Malone of Whitewright.
Members of Zeta Tau Alpha are currently selling pink “Kats for the Cause” T-shirts for $10 each. All proceeds will be donated to promote breast cancer research, awareness and education. Last year approximately $5,000 was raised and distributed through the Zeta Tau Alpha Foundation to “Think Pink!,” Yoplait’s Save Lids to Save Lives campaign, and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Shirts are available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this week at the Lowman Student Center mall area, SHSU Office of Student Activities, SHSU Athletic Ticket Office, Get Dark Tanning Salon, and PromoWorld.
Also, Colleges Against Cancer, the SHSU Student Activities Office, and Zeta Tau Alpha will be in the LSC mall Nov. 10-12 to distribute hot chocolate with pink marshmallows, pink snow cones, and strawberry and cherry yogurt.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
