Sam Houston State University’s governing board has approved room rate increases of 4-8 percent beginning in the fall 2009 semester.
The Texas State University System Board of Regents set the rates during its regular quarterly meeting held Feb. 19-20 in Austin. The board oversees four Lamar institutions in addition to two Sul Ross State institutions, Texas State and Sam Houston State.
The board also authorized SHSU to increase meal plan rates by 6 percent beginning in fall 2009.
Reasons for the increase of the room rates include increased costs of operations, the minimum wage increases for student staff, increased renovations and repairs, the installation of safes in four small houses, and the purchase of a surveillance camera system for a residence hall.
Reasons for the increase in meal plan prices include the impact of cost-of-living increases, inflation pass-throughs from food service provider ARAMARK, and higher utility costs.
In other action the board authorized the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling to offer the current Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program via distance education.
Authorization was also granted to the Department of Computer Science to offer the current MS in Information Assurance and Security program via distance education.
Both will be offered beginning in the fall 2009 semester.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
