Staff Council Spotlights Employees

The Sam Houston State University's Staff Coucil's "Spotlight on Staff" award is given monthly to a university employee as a way to learn about other staff members and to recognize and show appreciation for the work he/she does for the univerity. Staff members are randomly selected by the council's public relations committee and are surprised with a certificate of appreciation and a basket of SHSU items, gift certificates and homemade goods.

Staff Council PR committee members include Julie Schwab, Trisha Allen, Kelli Leaf, Ann Broussard, Lori Proctor, Amanda Burris, Gayle Bullard, Jennifer Skains, Susan Hayes, Trina Strange, Sherry Hirsch, Norma Vasquez and Joe Hyde. May 2009: Dorothy Randle

Dorothy Randal

Randal has been serving as a custodial maintenance person in the Newton Gresham Library for more than 25 years. Happily married "to a wonderful man" for 12 years, Randal has two children and three grandchildren. Of her work in the NGL, she says, "It's easy to stay motivated because I like my job."

April 2009: Joe Hyde

Hyde has been a carpenter with the Physical Plant for nine years. He and his wife, Gorgana, who is a secretary in the biology department, recently moved to Huntsville with their family. He is a member of the Huntsville Church of Christ and is also an avid bow hunter. Hyde and Georgana have been married for 30 years. They have two sons, Jeremy and Casey, who also works with the Physical Plant, as well as two grandchildren, Nathan and Harper.

March 2009: Steve Sandlin

Sandlin is an engineer in the mass communications department. He has spent 13 of his 37 years in the technological/engineering industry at SHSU, previously working for KSAM radio and KBTX Channel 3 in Bryan/College Station. As the mass communications engineer, he installs and maintains the broadcast equipment, and through contacts and friends has helped secure more than $350,000 worth of donated equipment in one year. Sandlin's grandfather also worked for SHSU, serving as the building and maintenance superintendent, and also was a close friend and fishing buddy with former university president Harmon Lowman. His hobbies include working on classic cars, and he is currently building a house outside of town.

February 2009: Denise Holcomb

Denise Holcomb

Holcombe, who has worked for SHSU for 18 years, is a secretary in the Lowman Student Center, performing duties for Student Activities and for associate vice president of Student Services Keith Jenkins. She previously worked in the Athletics department. She currently serves on the student service fee committee and has served on the Heart of Champions committee in the past. Holcombe, who recently moved to Trinity to be closer to her parents, has four children and five grandchildren. Her hobbies include bowling, golfing and sewing.

January 2009: Rhonda Ellisor

Rhonda Ellisor

Ellisor is the director of major gifts for University Advancement, a position she's held for the past two years. A Bearkat alumna, she earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1987. She and husband Billy Sherman have a 14-year old son, Brad. Ellisor is a member of the Let's Talk committee and works with the Alumni Association office. Her community endeavors include serving as the president of Rotary club and teaching first grade at the University Heights Baptist Church with her husband. Her hobbies include traveling and photography.

December 2008: Jeffery Roberts

Roberts has worked at SHSU since August 2000, currently in Institutional Research. He previously served as a student assistant in the library science department, as a teaching assistant in the history department, and in the Honors program. Roberts, who is preparing to apply for a doctoral program in history, is married to a soon-to-be Bearkat alumna who will graduate Saturday. Among his hobbies are reading and "any outdoor activity," especiall golf. In addition, Roberts serves on SHSU's strategic planning and honors admissions committees.

November 2008: Janis Faye Bradford

Bradford has worked in the Financial Aid Office for the past nine months, serving as the Texas/state grants assistant. The Huntsville native and HHS graduate is married and has three children and two grandchildren, 5-year-old twin boys. Her hobbies include exercising, particularly running, and she is a member of a local church. Financial Aid assistant director Lydia Hall called Bradford "a calming agent for the Financial Aid office."

October 2008: Rafael Pulgar

Pulgar

Pulgar has worked at SHSU for the past 13 years, currently serving as the project technical director for the Police Research Center, in the College of Criminal Justice. As part of his job, he helps in the design of emergency (911) software for police departments, the University Police Department and around the state of Texas. Pulgar, who loves car racing, has lived in The Woodlands for four years with his wife and children.

September 2008: Misty Cloud

Cloud

Cloud has been an accounting clerk II in the Administrative Accounting department since November 2006. The Latexo native spends her spare time barrel racing, a sport she has participated in since the age of 13, and has qualified for the world championship three times, participating once. Cloud collects horse sculptures, some of which are displayed in her office. She currently lives in Huntsville.

SHSU 'In the News'

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
