School is not the only thing going on at SHSU during the summertime. The university also offers a wide variety of camps to entertain and educate many different personalities.
Music camps for full band, orchestra, piano, drumline and choir will take place during the summer. Leadership camps for drum majors, new marchers and percussion will be also be offered. Detailed information and camp dates can be found at www.music.shsu.edu/camps.
The SHSU athletics department will help students hone their sports skills with camps focusing on football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball and track.
The point guard college basketball camp will be offered three different times: June 7-11, July 5-9 and 18-22.
Brenda Nichols and Jamene Caldwell will present a youth basketball camp June 22-26. Nichols is the SHSU women’s head basketball coach and Caldwell is the assistant women’s basketball coach.
The Bob Marlin Youth Basketball Camp will be held June 15-18. The Bob Marlin High School Elite Basketball Camp will be held July 2. Marlin is the SHSU men’s head basketball coach.
Prep All-Stars Youth Basketball Camp will be held in the Health and Kinesiology Center on July 9-12. For more information on Prep All-Stars, visit www.prepallstars.net.
Mark Johnson Youth Baseball Camps will be held June 6 and August 22 for high school students only and on March 9-11, June 8-10, July 6-8 for all youth ages. Johnson is the head baseball coach for SHSU. For more information, contact assistant coach Philip Miller at philipmiller31@yahoo.com.
Todd Whitten, head football coach, is offering youth and high school football camps that will be held July 5-7 and July 23. Matt Griffin Sports International Youth Football Camp will be held July 18-22.
Bob Brock Bearkat Softball Academy will be held June 28-July 2 and July 12-16. Brock is the head softball coach.
Brenda Gray Youth Volleyball Camp will be held June 28-July 1. There will also be a track camp, but the dates are tentative. Gray is the Bearkat volleyball head coach.

The National Cheerleading Association Camps will be offered June 6-10, 13-17, 20-24 and July 5-8 and 18-22. There will also be an array of academic camps, church camps and 4-H camps.
The USDA-Bobby Lane Engaging in Pipeline Math and Science Camp will be held June 9-12. It is an agricultural-based camp for special populations of students in a school district within the urban and suburban area. In this program, high school students will interact with professors of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and agricultural science, engaging in hands-on learning so they can understand the professional side of math and science career paths.
The Boys and Girls Harbor of Houston Camp is a camp that provides events for children and families in crisis. It will be held June 14-19.
Southeast District 9 4-H Leadership Lab Camp will be held June 24-26. For more information, e-mail kchilek@tamu.edu.
Church camps include Apostolic Tabernacle youth camp, offered June 25-27; Sugar Creek Baptist Church leadership youth camp, held June 28-July 4; and the Southwest Brethren summer conference, held June 26-28.
Camp Invention/Continuing Education Office Camp will be held July 20-24.
The Sam Houston State Writer’s Project Youth Camp will be offered but has not yet set a date. For more information, contact the department of English at 936.294.1404.
“These camps are a lot of fun and there is a lot of spirit. It gives students a college atmosphere while they have fun. Aramark also has a really good nutrition program for the students,” Patrick Antwi, staff associate summer camps coordinator for the office of continuing education and summer camps, said.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
