In the 19th Century, civil and women’s rights leader Susan B. Anthony said that “woman must not depend upon the protection of man, but must be taught to protect herself, and there I take my stand."
The Department of Student Activities will stand with women and encourage them do the same during its inaugural SHSU Women’s Symposium on March 18.
The half-day long event will include two speakers and breakout sessions designed to empower and motivate women, according to Student Activities event manager Brandon Cooper.
"March is National Women's History Month, and this is really an opportune time for us to showcase the amazing women we have at SHSU, and give them a little insight into the women they are and the amazing women they can become," Cooper said. "Our theme, 'Unleashing the Woman Within,' was given in an attempt to let women truly develop and nurture the amazing female identity."
The symposium will kick off at 9 a.m. with a breakfast, during which time SHSU alumna and president of Quantum Leap Success Coaching Kathy Bowersox will discuss “Career Coaching for Women,” in Lowman Student Center Room 320.
Afterward, participants will attend three breakout sessions led by SHSU facilitators who will discuss various women’s topics in the LSC Theater.
The 25-minute sessions will feature Rosanne Keathley and Judy Nelson, discussing “Women’s Issues on Campus;” Jeanine Bias and Bernice Strauss, discussing “Women’s Self Confidence;” and Angie Burns and Ashley McDonough, discussing “Women’s Spirituality.”
From 11:25-11:55 a.m., women will have the opportunity to visit booths on the SAAFE House, women’s health—by the Student Health Center—and women’s fitness and nutrition during an organization fair on the third floor of the LSC.
The symposium will culminate at noon with a luncheon featuring motivational speaker Christine Hassler, who will discuss “Life Coaching and Motivation for Women” in LSC Room 320.
The luncheon will be hosted by SHSU’s first lady, Nancy Gaertner.
The SHSU Women’s Symposium, which Cooper said they plan to make an annual event, is free and open to all students, faculty and staff members and alumni.

Participants may attend any or all of the scheduled events.
The symposium is also sponsored by the Office of Multicultural and International Student Services and the Student Money Management Center.
