In the coming weeks, about 600 SHSU faculty and staff will receive an email with the link to a web survey, soliciting their opinions and perceptions about the university’s work environment, according to David White, director of Human Resources.
SHSU is participating in the nation-wide survey at the request of President Gaertner.
The national study, “’Great Colleges to Work For’ is designed to recognize institutions that have been successful in creating great workplaces and to increase our understanding of the factors that influence organizational culture within higher education,” Gaertner said.
The study is sponsored by the Chronicle of Higher Education and ModernThink, a research and consulting firm that specializes in organizational culture and workplace excellence.
The study also includes an analysis and assessment of the institution’s human resource practices and services such as employee compensation, benefits, internal communication and collaboration, and the availability of support services such as wellness programs, training and development opportunities.
The survey sample of 600 was randomly and proportionately drawn from the universe of faculty, administration and professional support staff at SHSU, said Rita Caso, director of the Institutional Research and Assessment Office.
“The survey itself is hosted on a server owned by the ModernThink research firm. All responses will go directly to them and be analyzed by them,” Caso said. “Employees will have complete confidentiality.”
“We hope all employees who receive the survey link will take the time to respond and give their candid opinions. The value, validity and significance of the results will depend on a good, solid response rate.”
The results of the study will be published in the Chronicle of Higher Education July 30, 2010.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
