A new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education has named Sam Houston State University among the nation’s best universities to work for.

The recognition comes as part of the publication’s “2010 Great Colleges to Work For” survey which was released Monday.

"The faculty, staff and community have long known that Sam Houston State University is a great place to work," said SHSU President Jim Gaertner. "It is rewarding to receive national recognition, as well.

"Sam Houston State is very fortunate to have employees who are enthusiastic and passionate about their work, and that leads to a cooperative and collaborative environment and positive workplace interactions," he said.

SHSU was one of only two public, 4-year universities in Texas that were named as great working places. The other was the University of Texas-Austin.

More than 43,000 people at 275 campuses were surveyed about how universities ranked in 12 categories to compile the list of the nation’s 97 best colleges or universities to work for.

Four-year colleges and universities accounted for 221 of the institutions surveyed, and 2-year colleges for 54.

SHSU was recognized in four of the 12 “great” categories: facilities, workspaces and security; job satisfaction; supervisor or department-chair relationship; and respect and admiration.

The survey was administered by ModernThink LLC, a human resources consulting firm in Wilmington, Del. and was considered “scientifically random and statistically significant.”

The survey instrument was based on an assessment that has been used in 55 “Best Places to Work” programs involving more than 4,000 organizations. A panel of higher education experts helped customize the survey to reflect issues unique to colleges.
