The SHSU Army ROTC will share the “gift of life” with troops in Afghanistan and Iraq through a blood drive on Monday and Tuesday (Feb 8-9).
The drive, open to both the Bearkat and Huntsville communities, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days in the Health and Kinesiology Center Multi-Purpose Room No. 3, the old weight room.
"Blood units are in high demand at the moment,” said 2nd Lt. Justin Castro, Bearkat Battalion gold bar recruiter. “With the recent tragic earthquake in Haiti earlier this month, major organizations are shifting focus to providing aid and supplies to the country.
“This is a great opportunity for Americans to donate and directly support the war on terrorism," he said.
Donors must bring a valid picture identification in order to give, must weigh at least 110 pounds and should be in general good health, without any cold or flu symptoms.

The department of foreign languages and the International Student Friendship Ministry will celebrate the Chinese New Year with an evening of cultural activities on Friday (Feb. 5).
The event will be held from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Chi Alpha building, at 1010 15th St.
Among the activities scheduled are an introduction to the culture, a Chinese calligraphy demonstration, a Tai Chi performance, games and free food.
Chinese New Year falls on Feb. 14 this year.

Representatives from nine different agricultural-related entities will be on campus on Tuesday (Feb. 2) to speak with students about full-time jobs and internships during the Agricultural and Industrial Sciences Career Fair.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.
Among the agencies scheduled to attend are JB Hunt Transport, Sanderson Farms Organization Development, Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Department of Agriculture’s pesticide program, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s game warden training academy, the Brickman Group and the USDA’s Farm Service Agency and its Smuggling Interdiction and Trade Compliance (SITC) Program.
The event is open to students from all academic backgrounds, with employees being sought for positions in management, government/public administration, operations, law enforcement, teaching and construction and contracting, as well as other agricultural-related jobs.

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Initiative will kick off the Super Bowl celebration early while showing students how to party safely on Tuesday (Feb. 2).
Super Bowl Safety Zone, part of the Six Weeks of Alcohol Awareness Training program, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.
During the “pre-game” event, participants can have mocktails and snacks while learning about blood alcohol content, alcohol serving sizes and tips for a safe Super Bowl Sunday.
The SWAAT program allows students to earn prizes by attending events, which accumulate as students attend more programs.

Alpha Tau Omega and the Walker County United Way are working together to bring the Harlem Ambassadors to Huntsville High School on Monday (Feb. 8).
The charity event, benefitting the United Way, will pit the Ambassadors against the local Huntsville Hoopsters, a team comprising Huntsville community members, as well as a few university students. It will begin at 7 p.m. at the Huntsville High School gym.
“The Harlem Ambassadors are similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, but they give a positive message during the show,” said David Kelley, ATO alumni relations, social services and fundraiser chair. “All members of the team are college graduates and drug free.”
Tailgating will begin at 6 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for general admission and $10 for floor seats for SHSU students.

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum will share the work of famous Texans Kris Kristoferson and Matthew McConaughey in their movie set in the Lone Star State with its first Texas Thursday Movie Night showing of the semester on Feb. 4.
The presentation of “Lone Star” will be played at 7 p.m. in the Walker Education Center Auditorium.
“We are hosting this free movie event in an effort to promote museum awareness and to educate the public about Texas through film,” said Megan Buro, museum marketing coordinator. “It is our hope that students and residents of Huntsville will become more aware of the museum programs and facilities by frequenting our free ‘Texas Thursdays’ movie night.”
John Sayles' murder-mystery explores interpersonal and interracial tensions in Rio County, Texas, as Sam Deeds, the local sheriff, is called to investigate a 40-year-old skeleton found in the desert.
The movie was nominated for an Academy Award in 1997 for best original screenplay.
All Texas Thursday Movie Night showings have some tie to the state, either made in Texas, have a plotline centered around the state or a native as the director or a main actor, according to Buro.
All presentations are free. Seating in the Education Center Auditorium is limited to 150.

The Student Advising and Mentoring Center will kick off the spring semester by teaching students to “study smart” during its workshop series beginning on Monday (Feb. 1).
The Study Skills Workshop Series comprises six one-hour sessions that focus on studying smart, procrastination, time management, reading textbooks and note taking, test taking strategies and stress management.
Sessions will be held on a variety of days and times to accommodate student schedules.
Late-start series of the session will begin Feb. 22, and the second series will begin March 22.
All sessions will be held in the SAM Center, located in College of Humanities and Social Science Building Suite 170.
Space is limited, and students are encouraged to call or stop by the SAM Center to sign up.

New faculty members in the College of Education are getting the opportunity to learn from more experienced, tenured faculty members with the college’s new “Rising Stars Program.”
Initiated last year through the college’s Office of Graduate Programs, the purpose of the program is to provide support to tenure-track assistant professors within the first two years of their tenure at SHSU, according to Beverly Irby, associate dean for Graduate Programs.
Each assistant professor is assigned a mentor based on either scholarly interest in a topic or research methodology.
The 18 “Rising Stars” receive targeted professional development related to research and publishing, a COE mentor for research, a certificate of participation and $200 grant toward things such as conference attendance, workshop attendance, or research books.
The 2009-2010 “Rising Stars” faculty members include Dixie Carwile, Donna Cox, Hannah Gerber, Ivy Hsieh, Teresa Hughes, James Hynes, Sheila Joyner, Robert Maninger, Cynthia Martinez-Garcia, Lautrice Nickson, Mary Petron, Jessica Rueter, Jose Santiago, Sheryl Serres, Valerie Sharon, Matthew Wagner, Joan Williams and Luanna Zellner.

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
