For the first time at Sam Houston State University, the Counseling Center, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and the Department of Athletics will be hosting “Love Week,” a series of events and discussions centered on issues of love and relationships Feb. 8-11.
The program will provide entertainment as well as preparation for Valentine’s Day.
“The program will prove beneficial to students as the building, maintaining and ending of a romantic relationship may have a huge impact on in a student’s life,” said Elizabeth Charrier, counseling psychologist in the SHSU Counseling Center.
Each day of Love Week will include one or more events in which aspects of relationships will be discussed by various speakers.
“The programming throughout the week will help students learn how to better cope with various aspects of their relationship to hopefully help them grow in their connections to themselves and others,” said Charrier.
The week begins on Monday (Feb. 8) with “I HEART U,” presented by Sarah Hanel and Tina Deases from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area, during which students may stop by the table in front of the LSC and send a note of appreciation to someone he or she cares about.
Shantha Stokes will discuss the realities of relationships in “How to Survive a Break-up” on Tuesday, Feb. 9 from 2–3 p.m. in the LSC Room 308. The workshop deals with break-ups and how to handle potentially serious situations.
Wednesday (Feb. 10), will present students with the opportunity of learning how to understand the miscommunication that often occurs between sexes. Counseling Center Director Drew Miller will speak on “Demystifying your Boyfriend’s or Girlfriend’s Brain” from 2-3 p.m. in the LSC Room 307.
The day will continue in the LSC Theatre from 7-8:30 p.m. with Sex Signals, an award winning educational and entertainment group. The production will cover topics of mixed messages, gender role stereotypes and the unrealistic fantasies that contribute to misunderstanding between sexes.
For the individuals currently involved or interested in on-line dating, Neetha Devdas and Julie Swanson’s “Online Dating: Pleasures and Perils” on Thursday (Feb. 11) will focus on the whys and hows of online dating and will be held from 1-2 p.m. in LSC Room 307.
Love Week will conclude at 3 p.m. with Sharanya Udipi’s “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do” in the LCS Room 307. The workshop will give students the tools needed to decide when it’s time to walk away from a relationship and an understanding of the healthy way to do so.
Also during Love Week, the Counseling Center will look for SHSU’s “Healthiest Couple.” Students are encouraged to nominate a couple that has been together at least six months and exhibits qualities of a healthy relationship. These qualities might include productive communication, mutual respect, balance of relationship and affection, according to Charrier.
“Students can write a top 10 format with a narrative about what attributes of the top three relationships are most significant. They can also write a description of the couple they are nominating,” she said.
The nominator of the winning couple will win a gift card and the winning couple will be awarded a $50 gift card to The Farmhouse. The second place couple will receive a gift basket. Submissions will be accepted through the end of Love Week, and the winner will be announced the following week.
“Whether in a relationship or not, there is something for each student to be gained by attending Love Week,” Charrier said. “Learning how to maintain a healthy life-style is something everyone can benefit from.”

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
