SHSU will join the global effort to stop the violence against women and girls with a “V-Day” benefit presentation of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues.”
The event, part of the Women’s History Month celebration, will be held Wednesday and Thursday (March 24-25) at 5 p.m. in the Farrington Pit.
V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of various artistic works.
To date, the V-Day movement has raised over $70 million and educated millions about the issue of violence against women and the efforts to end it, crafted international educational, media and PSA campaigns, launched the Karama program in the Middle East, reopened shelters, and funded over 11,000 community-based anti-violence programs and safe houses all over the world.
SHSU’s production, performed by students, faculty and staff, will benefit the SAAFE House.
Donations of $5 are requested for those who attend.

Judith Loredo, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board assistant commissioner, will discuss her life and career path, as well as field questions, on Wednesday (March 24).
The Grassroots speaker series lecture will be held at 5 p.m. in College of Humanities and Social Sciences Building Room C090.
Following the discussion, a meet-and-greet with refreshments will be held in the Student Advising and Mentoring Center, located in CHSSB Suite 170.
The “Grassroots: A Series of Conversations on Leadership in a Diverse Community” was created with the aim of promoting the career aspirations and academic achievements of SHSU’s minority students.
The lecture is sponsored by the academic support programs of the Student Advising and Mentoring Center; the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College; the International Hispanic Association; Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.; the NAACP; the Ronald E. Approximately 127 schools and school districts will be talking to potential educators during the Spring Teacher Job Fair on Wednesday (March 24).
The fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Representatives from districts from Texas’ metropolitan areas, as well as smaller school districts and a few private schools, will visit with students or alumni who may be interested in a position.
In addition, agencies such as Harris County Dept. of Education, Texas Youth Commission’s Crockett State School, head start programs, World Serivces and Relations International Teaching and Education Service Center Regions 3, 4, 7, 10 and 12 will be available to discuss other employment possibilities.
Students who are registered on Jobs 4 Kats can get a jumpstart on finding a job or internship by logging on, at https://www.myinterfase.com/shsu/student/, to find a complete list of participating agencies, as well as descriptions of positions they are hiring for, according to Paige Andrews, job fair and special events coordinator.

Prospective students and parents will have the opportunity to visit the Sam Houston State University campus to see what the university has to offer on Saturday (March 27).
Saturdays @ Sam, sponsored by the SHSU Visitor Center, will begin with check-in and a parent coffee from 8-9 a.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, followed by a 30-minute opening session at 9 a.m.
Throughout the day, students and their parents can meet with academic advisers at the university’s Student Advising and Mentoring Center, have academic sessions with colleges of potential majors, visit the Go Kats Go Center and apply online for free, tour residence halls and the campus, attend an organizations fair, and get information from various departments on campus.
Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Johnson Coliseum concession stands, from 8-10 a.m. in Café Belvin and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Einstein Bros. Bagels. Lunch will also be available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Café Belvin for $6.25, as well as at the Paw Print from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The next Saturdays @ Sam will be held on Nov. 20.

The SHSU Horn Studio will perform pieces from the Baroque era through the 20th century during a recital on Tuesday (March 23) at 7:30 pm in the Recital Hall.
“One of the featured performances will be the ‘Concerto for Four Horns’ by Robert Schumann (a 19th century composer),” said Peggy DeMers, associate professor of horn. “The students performing are senior John Wes Stuart, sophmore Avery Harrison, freshman LeAnn Heckmann and Justin Craig.”
The student recital will be followed by a performance by the Sam Houston Horn Choir at 8:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall.
The performance will include works that have been transcribed for four to eight horns, including 20th century composer Eric Ewason’s “The Grand Canyon Suite” and traditional Italian songs such as “O' sole mio,” as well as works by Bruckner and Mozart.
The group consists of horn players in the School of Music and students from other majors that love playing the horn, according to DeMers.

Registration for the summer and fall semesters will begin during the Spring Break for honors students, on March 18.
Doctoral, graduate, post-baccalaureate and seniors will be allowed to register after the break, on March 22-23, followed by juniors on March 24, sophomores on March 25, and freshmen on March 26.
Registration, which will close at 8 a.m. on May 7, will open at 5:30 p.m. for each classification and follow the alphabetical schedule published in the Schedule of Classes.
Students subject to mandatory advisement must see an adviser before they can register for the spring.
Advisement appointments can be made in the Student Advising and Mentoring Center, located in College of Humanities and Social Sciences Room 170, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each school day, as well as from 5-6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, by calling 936.294.4444.

Richard E. Watts, professor and director of SHSU’s doctoral program in counselor education, has been selected to receive the prestigious American Counseling Association Fellow Award.
Watts noted that the description of the award published by ACA indicates the award "recognizes professional counselors who have made significant and distinguished contributions in areas including teaching, professional practice, leadership, and scientific achievement. It is the highest level of recognition one can receive from the official body of the counseling profession (ACA) and is based on a career body of work."
Watts is the author of more than 115 scholarly publications including 86 journal articles and book chapters and five books.
He is currently the editor of “Counseling and Values,” the journal of the Association of Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling, an ACA division, and has served in various editorial board capacities for nine different journals.
He also has also been active in national and state counseling association work including service on the board of directors of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling Related Educational Programs.
A diplomate in Adlerian psychology, Watts is a past recipient of the ACA David K. Brooks, Jr. Distinguished Mentor Award, the Robert O. Stripling Excellence in Standards Award and the Joseph and Lucille Hollis Publication Award, among others.
Watts will receive the award on March 21 at the 2010 ACA Conference in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Dance professor Cindy Gratz was invited to choreograph two works for presentation on The Greenbriar Consortium’s Channing Concert Series in Houston.
Gratz’s two pieces were set to the music of "Pan," from “Six Metamorphoses After Ovid,” by Benjamin Britten, and "Syrinx," by Claude Debussy, and were performed by SHSU senior Wes Miles and Houston High School of the Performing Arts student Miriam Leek.
She was invited to create the dances by world-renowned oboist Anne Leek for the concert, which was themed “Through the Woods … Darkly: A Musical Examination of Our Relationship with the Forest.”
“It included such music as Mozart’s ‘Hunt Quartet;’ Englebert Humperdinck’s ‘Evening Prayer’ (Hansel and Gretel); and a premier by Mary Carol McWarwick (What Gretel Knew),” Gratz said. “Since the theme for the evening related to forest imagery, the ‘Pan’ and ‘Syrinx’ legend was certainly tied to the theme.”
The consortium consists of musicians from the Houston Symphony and performers from Houston Grand Opera, and guest artists from a variety of fields, who gather together to present evenings of themed musical events.
The performances took place on March 2 at the First Universalist Church in Houston.
“The choreography and performances received much acclaim and the SHSU dance artists have been invited back for future collaborations,” Gratz said.

"I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
