2010 Staff Excellence Award Recipients Named

Four Sam Houston State University employees have been selected as recipients of the 2010 Staff Excellence Award.

They are Molly Doughtie of the College of Education, John Douglas of the Custodial and Grounds Department, Janie Joyce of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling, and Pamela Thaler of the College of Business Chair of Banking.

Awards are given annually to full-time staff members who excel in their job duties through excellence in service, proven commitment, meritorious performance and high level of motivation.

Staff members are selected based on nominations by their peers, supervisor and members of the SHSU faculty. In addition to a plaque of recognition, each recipient will be honored during the general university meeting at the beginning of the fall semester and awarded a $2,000 bonus.

Molly Doughtie

Molly Doughtie is a staff associate II in the College of Education and has been employed by SHSU for more than 16 years.

Among the comments supporting her nomination for the honor were:

“Molly is the ultimate ‘go-getter’ in all aspects of her job responsibilities. When the College of Education added a new office of the associate dean for graduate programs this year, Molly was named as the staff employee for that office and has been nothing but excellent and successful in her new role.”

“Molly supports our students at SHSU. She helps them determine their best path to success. Students often come back and indicate how much she has helped them in developing their careers.”

“Molly constantly promotes SHSU and our programs. I have witnessed her talking to prospective students and encourage them to attend and to be supportive of SHSU.”

“Molly assists all the graduate students in our program one time or another, and our students always tell us how helpful she has been.”

“She’s more efficient than anyone I know. As soon as you ask her to do a job and turn around, it is done and with a smile. She can be given a task, and as she does it she thinks through the process and tries to make it even better.”

John Douglas

John Douglas is a custodian who is assigned to Academic Building IV. He has been employed by SHSU for almost 14 years.

Comments supporting his nomination included:

“John Douglas is always kind. He always has a smile on his face and encourages others around him. He goes beyond the call of duty for employees of the history department. If he cannot answer questions or solve problems, he will find solutions for our inquiries.”

“John is very discreet and careful. If I am meeting with a student, he doesn’t insist on entering the office at that time. He faithfully comes back later once the student has left. He respects my interactions with students and puts them first. His sensitivity is much appreciated.”

“John is friendly and likes working at SHSU. We’ve expressed to each other how lucky we are to have good jobs in a beautiful, park-like setting with pleasant co-workers. He is always in a pleasant mood and seems genuinely satisfied with his work. I’ve never head him complain about his work nor speak poorly of his co-workers. He has a fantastic attitude.”

Janie Joyce

Janie Joyce has been employed as a secretary III in the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling for more than 18 years. She previously worked in alumni office for 15 years.

Comments supporting her nomination included:

“Ms. Joyce has proven her long-term commitment to Sam Houston State University. She is a mentor to all new department secretaries in the college, and she willingly assists them in learning their new requirements.”

“Janie has the ability to multi-task in a very busy department with a large number of faculty needing her help at the same time. Janie understands SHSU procedures, policies and protocol and serves as a resource for everyone in the department.”

“She cleverly develops solutions to difficulties that occur in various programs. When all else fails, see Ms. Janie!”

“One of her most impressive qualities is the fact that Janie treats everyone with the same level of fairness and respect. From our undergraduate student workers to the dean, everyone receives the same positive attitude, the same professionalism, and the same undivided attention to their problem or need from Janie. She always maintains a positive attitude that helps set a positive tone for our department.”

Pamela Thaler

Pamela Thaler is an administrative coordinator for the College of Business Administration Chair of Banking, and she has worked at SHSU for more than 10 years.

Comments supporting her nomination included:

“In addition to her regular duties, she arranges job interviews for all of our banking students, setting up the times, scheduling the students and working with employers. She has a burning desire to make sure every student gets a job.”

“Pam is one of the most efficient employees in the College of Business Administration. She has to be in order to accomplish all that she does in handling the scheduling of interviews for students with employers who come to the building; all internships in both Departments of Finance and General Business; aiding in the money-raising functions of the chair of banking; and the normal correspondence, telephone, and email communications for the office of the chair of banking.”

“Pam works in a high profile office that demands excellence in a wide variety of venues. She is equally adept at managing her office as she is at cultivating relationships with potential employers and benefactors.”

“Her technical skill set in working with office software is excellent. Her personality and smile make her a delight to work with. Her attention to detail assures that the job will be done correctly.”

Brian Domitrovic, assistant professor of history, appeared on Book TV (C-SPAN) May 1-2, speaking about his recent book "Econoclasts: The Rebels Sparked the Supply Side Revolution and Restored American Prosperity" (www.econoclasts.net).

Houston Chronicle education writer Jeannie Kever recently turned to Regents Professor of English Paul Ruffin for his views on university presses moving toward "digital books" as opposed to traditional ink-on-paper."We're fulfilling the ancient role of the university press, and that is to produce books," said Paul Ruffin, the Texas poet laureate for 2009 and director of the Texas Review Press at Sam Houston State University. "I don't want to give up the book because it is an art."
