SCULPTURE EXHIBIT OPENS SEPT. 28

"The transmission of confidential information and the power generated by the control of secret material," is how Sam Houston State University featured artist Michael Aurbach describes his sculpture, "Confessional," which will open for exhibit Sept. 28.

"Confessional" will be on display Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery located within the SHSU Department of Art complex on the southwest side of the campus. There is no admission fee.

MUSEUM CO-SPONSORS STORYTELLING FESTIVAL

Story telling on the front porch will be revisited Oct. 20 and 21 when the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and several other contributors co-sponsor the "Autumn Tales" regional 1995 Huntsville Storytelling Festival.

Storyteller Sherry Pierson and her partner, artist George Bevill, will perform from 7-9 p.m. Friday. Registration will take place from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The remainder of the day will be dedicated to the showcase of elementary and secondary storytellers, non-professional storytellers and professional storytellers.

The Friday evening and Saturday morning presentations will be held in the Katy and E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center at 1402 19th Street in Huntsville. The Saturday afternoon presentations will be held on the porches of the Woodland Home and/or Steamboat House, located east of the education center on 19th Street. PARENTS' WEEKEND

SHSU students can introduce their parents to their new home away from home Sept. 22 through Sept. 24.

The SHSU Parents Association, Inc. in conjunction with several other SHSU organizations are sponsoring Parents' Weekend. Activities include a leadership reception followed by a talent show Friday night. Saturday, beginning at 4:15 p.m., a barbecue dinner and rally with live entertainment will lead to the kickoff of the SHSU Bearkats vs. A&M-Kingsville football game.

The event concludes Sunday with an 8 a.m. breakfast followed by an interdenominational worship service at 10:30 a.m. For details, contact Frank Parker at 294-1781 or Student Life at 294-1785.

THEATRE STUDENTS DO WELL AT SUMMER FESTIVAL

Two Sam Houston State Theatre students have been recognized by SHSU President Martin J. Anisman for their recent apprenticeships in acting at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the number one summer theatre in the United States according to "Newsweek" magazine.

Jennifer Marks, a senior from Seguin, and Sam Jones, a senior from Madisonville, worked with theatre students from Yale, Harvard, Amherst, USC, Temple, and New York University this summer at the festival in Williamstown, Mass. and were selected to return next year.

"These two SHSU students found that their talent, training, and work ethic put them at the top of the competitive heap in a collection of the best of the lot," said Dr. James Miller, chair of the Theatre and Dance Dept. "The invitation to participate there is extended to only a select few. The experience and connections give them the best entrance into the theatre that anyone could want."

WRITING PROGRAM SPONSORS EVENTS

The Sam Houston State Across-the-University Writing Program is sponsoring two new events to encourage more professional writing. A seminar entitled Bridged University and Career Writing, will be presented for faculty and students by the Department of Consumer Services, Fashion, and Design. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center room 303.

Focusing on Successful Writing Assignments and Evaluation Techniques is the title/topic of a faculty retreat to be held at Waterwood National Resort and Country Club Nov. 10-11. Angela Williams, Communication-across-the-Curriculum coordinator at The Citadel, will conduct the retreat.

FENSCH CONTRIBUTES ARTICLE ON OSCAR SCHINDLER

Thomas Fensch, Warner endowed chair professor at Sam Houston State University, has produced a book which includes a previously unpublished article by a journalist who knew Oskar Schindler.

"Oskar Schindler and His List: The Man, the Book, the Film, the Holocaust and Its Survivors," was published this month by Paul Eriksson Inc.

The book includes a major interview with Canadian journalist Herbert Steinhouse, who knew Schindler in Europe from 1946-1949. It includes a detailed article about Schindler, which Steinhouse wrote in 1949, but was not able to publish in the post-World War II years.

Over 40 other articles, essays and reviews are included in the book, as well as photographs of Schindler and German documents obtained from Steinhouse that have never been published.

In addition to editing the Schindler book, Fensch recently completed "The Sports Writing Handbook," second edition.
