Retired printmaking professor Stanley E. Lea and his wife, Ruth, have established Sam Houston State University's first scholarship in printmaking.
The Stanley E. Lea Printmaking Endowment Fund will provide an annual scholarship to a printmaking student who has shown creative talent and ability in printmaking. The first scholarship will be awarded in the 1996 spring semester.
Lea, who started the printmaking program at Sam Houston State University in 1961, retired in 1993.
Martin Amorous, chairman of the Art Department, said that contributions are also being received from friends, colleagues, and former students in honor of Lea's many years of dedicated service.

The SHSU debate team has been ranked 11th in the nation, after winning a tournament at the University of Houston and finishing fourth in another at the University of South Carolina.
It is the highest ranking ever for the SHSU debaters, who compete next weekend in the Texas Intercollegiate Forensic State Competition in San Antonio.
Team members are Christy Lowery, Tom Dougherty, Michael Scates, Kristi Kochensky, Daniel White and Jerod Laughlin. Debbi Hatton, lecturer in speech communication, is the team coach.
The top ranked team is Michigan, followed by Southern Illinois, Air Force Academy, Kansas State, Emory, Northwestern, UT-San Antonio, Alabama, U. S. Military Academy, Florida State and SHSU.
Authors Tomie dePaola, Angela Shelf Medearis and Jerry Stanley will be featured at the14th Annual Children's Literature Festival from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. March 16.
The event for librarians and educators will also include such activities as workshops on a variety of topics, authograph sessions and book exhibits. The cost is $50, which includes a meal and an activities packet.

Biscuits, venison, and sassafras tea are among the menu items for the Sam Houston Memorial Museum's Harvest Weekend Nov. 18.
Julie Baker of the Layland Museum in Cleburne will demonstrate and instruct in the intricacies of hearth cooking. The event is scheduled from 11 to 1 p.m. in the Houston Kitchen on the Museum grounds.
Volunteers are welcome to help cook or to just observe, eat and enjoy, said Lois Pierce, education curator.
The Museum's "Craft a Month" activity for November will be leather projects. Instruction is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Nov. 5 and 19 in the Museum Exhibit Hall.

Gresham Library faculty members R. Scott Harnsbergber, J. Ann Jerabek and Virginia K. P. Rigby are serving as editors of "Popular Culture in Libraries." The journal was founded by Library Science faculty member Frank Hoffmann and includes articles and book reviews.
The publication is concerned with the theoretical, intellectual, practical, and scholarly aspects of popular culture as it relates to libraries, museums and archives.
The Gresham Library at Sam Houston State University is the official depository for federal and state government documents, which are included in the library's computerized listing of holdings by author, title, subject and key word.
The documents are available for use by the public and SHSU employees and students on the Gresham Library's first floor.
The library has also expanded its hours by two hours a week. Operating hours are now 7:30 - 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 - 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. -11 p.m. Sunday.
The deadline for applications for the spring semester for the President's Employee Scholarship Program at Sam Houston State University is Wednesday.

Amy McClurd, sophomore general studies major from Huntsville, and Pamela Kay Fields, senior physics major from Sealy, have been awarded Faculty Centennial Scholarships totaling $400 each at Sam Houston State University.
The scholarships are supported by income from an endowment established by SHSU faculty during the university's 100th birthday celebration in 1979. Dr. Jo Ann Duffy chairs the selection committee.
