"While we are seeing the national rates for murder, crime and drug use go down for the first time in years, we are also witnessing both a troubling change in our young people's attitudes toward drugs and an increase in violent juvenile offenses," according to a letter received by Flanagan and signed by President Bill Clinton.
"Tragically," the letter continued, "it is once again considered 'cool' to use drugs--behavior which too often leads teens toward crime and violence."
Conference topics will include how to strengthen the efforts of family, the media, communities and businesses to reduce drug use and violence and help young people make positive choices.
The conference will be held Thursday. Flanagan has also been invited to a reception at the White House Wednesday evening.
The Chorale, conducted by Kent Hatteberg, will be one of the featured choruses at this year's national convention for music educators April 20 in Kansas City, Mo. An invitation to perform at the convention is received by only a small number of university choirs. The Tuesday/Thursday concerts will feature works prepared for that performance.
The Dobrogosz Mass will be performed by the Concert Choir, conducted by Dr. Wayne Barrett. The work will be accompanied by a string orchestra and by Hatteberg on solo piano.
"The work, in the words of some of my students, is 'really cool,'" said Barrett. "It is composed in a synthesis of musical styles: some jazz, some 'classical,' some pop."
Dobrogosz is an American living in Sweden. "I actually found out about him and this work on the Internet," Barrett said.
Concert admission is $5 for students and free for K-12 and SHSU students.
Angela Williams, director of The Citadel Writing Center in Charleston, S. C., will present the workshop from 8:15 a.m. - 5 p.m. in Room 312 of the Lowman Student Center. The program is free to interested faculty members but seating is limited. Call Dr. Patricia Williams at 294-1143 for details and reservations.
Items to be auctioned include the opportunity to coach the Orange or White teams in the 1996 Spring Football Game, sports trip packages, pro sports tickets, SHSU Bearkat sports memorabilia, and many others.

Schaffer's presentation was sponsored by the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling in SHSU's College of Education and Applied Science.
The focus of Schaffer's presentation was the emerging technology developed to accomplish this transfer--the Internet and its World Wide Web. He also discussed features and benefits of the technology and its implications to all levels of education.
Schaffer also chairs the Department of Educational Leadership's Educational Leadership Advisory Board. Copies of the presentation are available by calling 294-3845.
Kersey's primary public presentation will be at a brown bag luncheon from 12:30 -1:30 p.m. in room 216 of the Teacher Education Center. Interested members of the community and campus are invited.
Kersey will also speak to Dr. Phil Swicegood's class at 2 p.m. and at a meeting of Phi Delta Kappa at 7 p.m. in room 227, Teacher Education Center.
