Mental Health Awareness Day will include speakers, depression screenings, and an exhibits fair.
A forum of three speakers is scheduled for the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. The speakers, their topics, and the times of their presentations include:
Student depression screenings, which will be free, confidential and anonymous, are scheduled for 8 a.m.-1 p.m., in the LSC Ballroom Cloakroom. A counselor will be available for review of results of the screening.
The exhibits fair, featuring displays from campus and area service providers, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the mall area near the Lowman Student Center.
Mental Health Awareness Day is being sponsored by the SHSU Counseling and Health Centers. Staff and faculty are also eligible to participate.
Henson's presentation on "Writing for Publication" is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 16-17 in Room 312 of the Lowman Student Center. "Grant Proposal Writing" is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Henson will also meet individually with interested participants in 20-minute sessions to discuss grant proposal, article or book drafts.
Henson is the author of 22 books and more than 200 articles, including "The Art of Writing for Publication." Dr. Patricia Williams, director of the Across-the-University Writing Program, said she is accepting applications through Wednesday or until her enrollment limit is reached. Call 294-1143 for details.
The institute is a joint effort of Phi Delta Kappa, the Across-the-University Writing Program and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at SHSU. Registration is free.
Steen, a licensed psychologist and clinical social worker, a retired attorney, and former director of a family sexual abuse treatment program, will speak on "The Four 'P's' of Sex Offender Assessment: Prediction, Placement, Planning and Progress."
Some of the other topics to be covered include the sex offender treatment program in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the role of probation/parole officers, supervision of sex offenders, sex offender registration, victim compensation, use of the polygraph in treatment, and deviant sexual arousal.
Dr. Michael R. Arambula of San Antonio, who worked with convicted sex offender Larry Don McQuay, will close the workshop with a presentation entitled "Castration: Progressive Medicine or Frontier Justice."
Dr. James DeGeorge, who has taught writing at the college and professional levels for more than 20 years, will conduct the seminar. DeGeorge is a professor of journalism at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and has co-authored books on technical and business writing.
The seminar is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 7 and 8 at the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce, 1326 11th St. The registration fee is $350. For information call the SHSU Office of Extended Learning at 409-294-3869.
