ENDOWED CHAIR OF BANKING ESTABLISHED

Sam Houston State University has received a gift of $1 million to be used to establish an endowed chair of banking.

The endowment will support a faculty member who will teach banking and/or related courses in the College of Business Administration, develop and broaden curriculum in banking, conduct research related to the banking industry, and interface with banking practitioners through training programs and dissemination of information.

The chair holder will report to the chair of the Department of General Business Administration and Finance.

The dean of the College of Business Administration will appoint a selection committee to be directed by the chair of the Department of General Business Administration and Finance. The committee will evaluate the credentials of the candidates and submit at least two candidates for final consideration to the dean of the College of Business Administration.

The dean of the college, in conjunction with a representative appointed by the donor, will make a selection, with ultimate approval by the vice president for academic affairs and student services, the university president, and the university's board of regents.

Houston banker Robert E. Hutson, a 1965 Sam Houston State University graduate, has been designated as the donor representative.

"We are extremely grateful for this generous gift," said Dr. Bobby K. Marks, Sam Houston State University interim president. "While we have trained many business and banking leaders throughout the years, this gift will allow us to take more of a leadership role in banking education, and will certainly have a positive influence on the field of banking, especially in Texas."

The endowed chair in banking is the fourth endowed chair at Sam Houston State. There are also endowed chairs in criminal justice, journalism, and chemistry.
