Freshmen Micki Montie of Baytown and Sarah Dickerson of Centerville were named this year's recipients of the four-year scholarships created last spring to honor Dr. Richard A. Cording, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
The endowment was made possible by the "Hoops for Scholars" fund-raising event sponsored by the college and the SHSU Ladykat basketball team.
Over $22,000 in pledges - based on the number of two- and three-point "hoops" scored by the Ladykats during a game with Nicholls State - were garnered in what promoters hope to make an annual event.
Dickerson, a 1996 honors graduate from Centerville High School, will study biochemistry at SHSU and plans to pursue a career in cardiology. She is also an avid reader who enjoys writing poetry and short stories, as well as playing guitar.
Montie, who graduated with honors from Ross Sterling High School, plans to pursue a master's degree in music at SHSU and ultimately, to teach voice lessons. While in high school, Montie distinguished herself as a member of the Sterling choir and received numerous accolades for a variety of academic achievements.
The Cording scholarship will provide each recipient with $1000 per year during their undergraduate studies.
In 1994, after 15 years of service, Cording retired from the deanship of the College of Arts and Sciences to teach philosophy. During his tenure at SHSU, he has touched the lives of many students.
"Richard Cording's legacy of excellence, service, involvement and unselfishness is reflected in the students chosen as Cording Scholars," said Dr. Christopher Baldwin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
