"The event was organized to provide support, encouragement, and an exchange of ideas between women who are making a difference in the world," said Beverly Irby, professor of educational leadership, one of the co-sponsors.
Other sponsors include the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission and SHSU's Office of Extended Learning.
"The purpose of the conference is to allow professional women to come together to enhance their leadership skills and to learn how to balance their personal and professional lives," said Irby.
Women & Leadership speakers will include: Vicki Wright, executive director of the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission; Alice Rowe, author and educator; Irma Herrera, executive director of Equal Rights Advocates; and Evelyn Farmer, associate superintendent of the Fredericksburg Independent School District.
Conference's topics include: "Leadership Skills," "The Six Habits of Highly Balanced People," "Creating Balance and Success in the Male Word," "Moomba Laughter: The Motivational Soul for the Next Millennium," "Balancing Power with Caring," and others.
The event will be held at the Menger Hotel, located in San Antonio's Riverwalk district. The deadline for making hotel reservations is June 23.

At 5 p.m. Sunday Heather Waggoner (flute) and Crissie Deramee (clarinet) will give a student recital at the Recital Hall. Rhonda Caravajal (clarinet) will also appear there at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Both performances are free.
At 7:30 p.m. Monday the Percussion Ensemble will perform in Killinger Auditorium of the Beto Criminal Justice Center. The Jazz Ensemble will also present its concert there at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Admission to those concerts is $5 for Friends of Music and free to students.
On Friday and Saturday the East Texas Children's Choral Festival is scheduled for Killinger Auditorium and the Fine Arts Building. Call (409) 294-1360 for details and ticket information.
While the presentations are free, tickets for the luncheon are $10 and must be reserved by April 21.
Presenters include:
Ron Tyler, a professor of history at the University of Texas and current director of the Texas State Historical Association, who will speak on "Eastern Artists, Western Visions;"
Richard Francaviglia, head of the Center for Southwestern Studies at the University of Texas in Arlington, will who will present "Images of Steel: Railroads and the Promotion of the West;"
Ben Huseman, curator of the Amon Carter Museum, who will offer a program entitled, "From Field Sketches to Prints: 19th Century Western Expedition Images"; and
Tom Rogers, who teaches history for the North Harris Montgomery Community College System, who will examine "The Camera at Work in the Great American West of the 19th Century."
The symposium is being presented in conjunction with an exhibit of early western photography which is underway at the Walker Education Center through May 11. It is also open to the public with no admission fee.

"In addition to touching the lives of thousands of students over the years, Dr. Bounds is a prolific writer," said Allen Williams, who chairs the geography and geology department.
"Over his long professional career he published a number of books and articles and was instrumental in establishing the department's Cartography Lab."
