FRIENDS OF MUSIC SEEK MEMBERS
The Friends of Music, a non-profit organization benefiting Sam Houston State University music programs, will mark its 10th year with the 1997-98 concert season. A membership drive is currently in progress as the organization endeavors for raise a minimum of $20,000 for music scholarships and national and state performance activities by SHSU ensembles.
Membership in Friends of Music begins at the basic $25 "Passholder" level, allowing admission to all SHSU concerts for the season. Additional donations are rewarded with increased membership benefits including extra season passes, departmental mailings, invitations to post-concert receptions, and recognition on concert programs.
A Faculty Gala Concert, slated for 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, at SHSU's Killinger Auditorium, will launch the 1997-98 season. A special reception honoring 1997-98 Friends of Music will follow the concert in the historic Austin Hall.

BEARKAT BLOCK PARTY ON TAP
The White Hall parking lot at Sam Houston State University will be the site Tuesday night for what is being touted as "the biggest block party SHSU has ever seen." From 9 p.m. until midnight, the university's recreational sports and student services offices will host the "Bearkat Block Party" featuring music, games, food and an array of "crazy contests."
Activities on tap for all SHSU students include:
- Free jumbo hot dogs, snowcones, popcorn and drinks;
- Contests with lots of prizes such as a three-point hoops shoot-out, a football toss and hockey shot competition;
- A Dennis Rodman look-alike contest (judges start on the White Hall Pool deck at 10:30 p.m.;
- Campfire cooking demonstrations;
- Club sport demonstrations and games including rugby, lacrosse, in-line hockey, men's and women's soccer, volleyball and more;
- A bungee trampoline and a climbing mountain; and
- Make your own music video (and keep the tape!) with a totally interactive production studio.
In addition to the fun, approximately 200 SHSU student organizations will have representatives at the block party to answer questions about membership and organizational activities and benefits.
The 1997 Bearkat football season's first "Kat Kall" (that's pep rally to the uninitiated) will cap off the event at 11:30 p.m. On hand for the spirit-filled festivities will be the SHSU cheerleaders, the Orange Pride dancers, the SHSU Band and Bearkat football team. Cash prizes will be awarded to the most spirited individuals and organizations.
DIGITAL ART EXHIBIT OPENS
Beginning Thursday and running through Sept. 18 SHSU's Gladdis Geeslin Gallery will feature the digital art of Jeff Murphy.
Large-scale digital murals presented on tiled color ink jet prints, Murphy's series, entitled "Bible Stories," illustrates a theme of perpetual disbelief in spiritual absolutes.
A reception for the exhibit will be held at the gallery from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 11.
KATS CARAVAN TO TEXAS A&M
Beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Bowers Stadium parking lot, SHSU football enthusiasts will gather to decorate their vehicles for a spirited Bearkat caravan to Kyle Stadium in College Station. Then at 4 p.m. the SHSU Bearkats will test their claws in a gridiron showdown against the Texas A&M Aggies. Game tickets are $20 each and may be purchased at the SHSU Field House.
ALUMNI "AGGIELAND" BARBECUE SOLD OUT!
Over 400 former SHSU students have snatched up all the tickets for Saturday's special pre-game SHSU Alumni barbecue at the College Station Conference Center.
Kathy Bowan, director of SHSU's Office of Alumni Relations urges former Bearkats to keep in touch with her office at (409) 294-1841 for the latest details on upcoming alumni events around the state.
On Sept. 13 and 20, the alumni office will host tailgate parties at Bowers Stadium prior to SHSU's football games against Jacksonville State and Arkansas- Monticello from 5 p.m. until game time.
