On Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Beto Criminal Justice Center Killinger Auditorium, the Wind Ensemble will give their first performance of the fall semester. The group is under the direction of conductor Donald Ryder.
The concert will feature works by composers Jack Stamp (who studied with the late SHSU Professor Fisher Tull in 1982), Percy Grainger, Gustov Holst, Vincent Persichetti and Paul Hindemith.
On Tuesday evening, also at 7:30 p.m. in the Killinger Auditorium, John Paul will present a piano recital featuring works by French composers Claude Debussy and Cesar Franck and Frederic Chopin.
Chopin, who was born in Poland and lived and worked in France, has been described as "the greatest of all Polish composers, and the most Polish of all great composers."
On Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., the Opera Workshop Players will present two short comic operas. The setting for these performances will be SHSU's "opera house," the Recital Hall at 17th St. and Ave. J.
The first half of the opera program will be devoted to "Gallantry" by Douglas Moore. After intermission the audience will be treated to a P. D. Q. Bach original entitled "The Stoned Guest."
Described as a "half-act opera," it features "off coloratura" Carmen Ghia, "mezzanine" soprana Donna Ribalda, and "bargain counter tenor" Don Octava, as well as a "basso blotto" who portrays the Il Commendatoreador.
The SHSU opera program is under the direction of Mary Kay Lake.

Accepting awards were district superintendents Sonny Donaldson (Aldine), Richard E. Berry (Cypress Fairbanks), and David L. Lusk (Conroe).
"Building Partners Across the World" was the theme for the one-day event held in the Teacher Education Center. Michele Hewlett-Gomez and Patricia Morales co-chaired the conference.
SHSU students and faculty members also on the program included M. Eren Johnson, Hollis Lowery-Moore, Maribel Garza Roddick, Marsha Harman, Alcibiades Policarpo, Joaquin Rodriguez-Barbera, Robin McGrew-Zoubi, Robert Williams and Joyce McCauley.
Program participants from the Huntsville school district were Janet Taylor, Cristina Woods, Maria Martinez, Jennifer Franklin, Diana Hernandez, Rosa Valles and Jean Walton and Veronica Covington.
Region VI Education Service Center participants included Linda Hubert and Geneva Taylor.
Entertainment for the event was provided by the Baile Folklorico de Huntsville. Dancers included Isabel Aguayo, Manuel Castillo, Mandy Hernandez, Felipe Hernandez, Felicia Avalos, David Avalos, Aristeo Isaias, Ivon Isaias, Leslie Llado, Lizette Santibanez, Crystal Santibanez, Alyson Gonzalez, Mari Orduno and Amparo Maldonado. The group's coordinator is Belia Aguayo.
Approximately 300 area public school teachers and Sam Houston State University language minority program students and faculty members participated in the conference.
Brian Millier, director, has invited interested community and university residents, students and employees to participate in rehearsals on Mondays from 7-9:30 p.m. in the SHSU Choir Rehearsal Hall (Music Building Room 202).
Performances scheduled for the 1997-'98 season include "Requiem" and other choral works by Gabriel Faure, to be performed with the SHSU Symphony Orchestra Nov. 18, and J. S. Bach's "St. John Passion" scheduled for April 21, 1998.

Distinguished Alumni Awards will be presented to James Gilmore and Frank Leathers of Huntsville, Ronald Mafrige of Houston, John Martin of Conroe and Gary Whitlock of Midland, Michigan.
Former athletes to be inducted into the Hall of Honor include Gordon Cotton of Trinity, Frank Fox of Houston, David Munden of Brady and Phillip Estep of Corpus Christi.
