The finalists are Dr. Christopher Baldwin, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Sam Houston State; Dr. D'Ann Campbell, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.; Dr. Randy Moore, interim senior vice president and provost at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio; and Dr. David E. Payne, vice president for academic affairs at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kan.
Dr. Bobby K. Marks, SHSU president, will make a selection from the finalists after they have all visited campus and met with various university groups and individuals. Those visits could start as early as this week and will be concluded as soon as schedules of the finalists permit.
The new vice president will take over for Dr. James Gilmore, who has indicated that he plans to retire when his successor is selected. Gilmore replaced Marks in the vice presidential position when Marks was named interim president in October, 1995.
Baldwin has been a dean and professor in the Department of Geography and Geology at SHSU since 1994. A native of England, Baldwin earned his doctorate at the University of Liverpool, taught in England and France and came to the United States in 1984 to teach at Boston University.
Campbell served as dean of the college of arts and sciences at Austin Peay for four years, and is now a professor of history. A native of Colorado, she earned her doctorate at the University of North Carolina. She has also taught history and served as dean for women's affairs at Indiana University and taught military history at the U. S. Military Academy.
Moore has held his present position at the University of Akron since 1995. He also served that institution as its dean of arts and sciences. A native of Columbus, Texas, and graduate of Texas A&M University, he earned his doctorate at the University of California at Los Angeles and has taught in the field of biology.
Payne has been vice president of academic affairs and professor of sociology at Emporia State since 1989. He earned his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and his master's and doctorate from the University of North Carolina. He also served as vice president for academic affairs and professor of sociology for two years at Sangamon State University.
Dr. Richard Eglsaer, who chaired the search committee, said that more than 70 applications were received for the position. Other members of the search committee were Dr. Harry Bohan, Dr. Rolando del Carmen, Dr. Jo Ann Duffy, Dr. Bill Green, Dr. Marie Hayden, Dr. Paul Loeffler, Student Government President Margie Musselman, Dr. Mary Ann Nolteriek, Dr. Jim Olson, and Dr. Bettye Weatherall.
