This year's special guests, members of national fraternities and sororities, will be treated to a Texas-sized "All-Greek" barbecue at SHSU's Johnson Coliseum.
"It is our intent to honor a different student group each year," explained Kathy Bowman, director of SHSU's Office of Alumni Relations. "Next year we'll round up former members of SHSU's Student Government Association, and in the years ahead we'll throw a party for other student groups."
Of course, all the homecoming events dear to Bearkat loyalists are still on tap this fall.
The theme for the 1997 extravaganza is "Let The Good Times Roll." And roll they will as festivities kick off that Thursday evening with a spirit-filled student parade followed by the roaring "Sam Jam" bonfire and a spectacular fireworks display.
The eventful weekend will be a time for nostalgia, for renewing old friendships and remembering the glories of school days past. It will be a time for paying tribute, for recognizing former students whose accomplishments have contributed to the Sam Houston State legacy. And it will be a time for catching up, for making new friends and marveling at the many new facilities, programs and technological innovations that have kept SHSU in the vanguard of higher education.
And of course, homecoming means football -- Bearkat football, the culminating event. This year's homecoming showdown at Bower's Stadium will test the Bearkats' gridiron prowess against the Nicholls State Colonels.
Prior to the game, in the Bowers Stadium parking lot, a university-wide tailgate party will provide food, fun and fellowship for returning Bearkats.
Another first, kicking off the 1997 homecoming festivities will be the Fall Alumni Classic Golf Tournament slated for Oct. 4 at the Texas National golf course in Willis. Funds raised by the tournament will support 13 scholarships sponsored by the SHSU Office of Alumni Relations.
