FORMER ATHLETES SELECTED FOR HALL OF HONOR
Former Sam Houston State athletes who distinguished themselves in their undergraduate days in basketball, football and golf, and have continued their efforts in business, industry and professions, will be honored during 1997 Homecoming activities.
Selected for induction into the Sam Houston State University Lettermen Association Hall of Honor were Gordon Cotton, Frank Fox, David Munden and Phillip Estep.
COTTON, who is now retired and lives near Trinity, was a three-year basketball letterman. He earned his bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State in 1939 and his master's from the University of Houston. He retired in 1980 after 38 years of teaching, coaching and school administration, including 34 years in the Houston Independent School District.
ESTEP, who is employed with the Quaker State Corp. in Corpus Christi, is the only person in NAIA history to play on four NAIA national championship golf teams. Estep accomplished this feat from 1978-'81. He was all-conference two years and an NAIA all-American in 1981, graduating in August, 1981.
FOX, who lives in Houston and has been employed by the Chevron company for 25 years, was a three-year starter and a captain as a senior in football. He was voted the Most Valuable Lineman in the NAIA championship game, which ended in a tie and resulted in a national co-championship.
MUNDEN was a four-year starter and captain in 1968 and '69. He was all-conference, all-Texas and all-American, and went on to play professionally in the Canadian, World, and Continental Football leagues, earning all-league honors six times. He is now in the cattle business in Brady, Texas.
This year's induction banquet is slated for 11 a.m. on Oct. 18 in the Lowman Student Center.
