STUDENTS RETURN FOR SPRING SEMESTER
Residence halls open Sunday. Registration, for those who have not done so already, is Monday and Tuesday. Classes begin Wednesday.The 1998 Spring Semester at Sam Houston State University is under way.
Some of the dates to remember for the spring are January 19, which will be a campus holiday in honor of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., and spring break for faculty and students, scheduled for the week of March 16-20. Staff spring holidays are March 19-20. A holiday is also scheduled for faculty and students on Good Friday, April 10.
The semester will end with Final Exam Study Day Wednesday, May 6, final exams May 7, 8 and 11, 12, and two commencement exercises May 16.
Graduates from the Colleges of Education and Applied Science and Criminal Justice will receive their degrees at 10 a.m., and those from the Colleges of Business and Arts and Sciences at 2 p.m.
SPRING '98 WILL HAVE BUSY EVENTS CALENDAR
Art, music, drama, dance and special events promise to make the 1998 Spring Semester at SHSU entertaining and educational. Community members are especially invited to participate.One of the first events will be the 38th Annual Art Faculty Show which opens Jan. 22 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery. A reception for that event, which runs through Feb. 12, is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Jan. 29 in the Geeslin Gallery.
The spotlight turns to drama in February, with the staging of the Shakespeare favorite "The Merchant of Venice." Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. Feb. 18-21, with a 2 p.m. matinee Feb. 21.
The art department's 2nd Annual National Juried Art Show opens Feb. 26, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. in the Geeslin Gallery, and runs through March 19.
Family and Consumer Sciences Week will be observed March 2-6 and the 16th Annual Children's Literature Festival will be held March 14. The 41st Annual Jazz Festival is set for March 7 and the SHSU Symphony Orchestra's Masterworks Concert is scheduled March 28.
April will be an especially busy theatre month, with "Baby With the Bath Water" to be performed April 1-4, and "Damn Yankees" April 15-18.
The Texas Folk Art Exhibition is scheduled for the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery April 2-23, with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. on the 2nd.
The 36th Annual Contemporary Music Festival will be held April 1-4, the East Texas Children's Choral Festival April 18, and a major works concert featuring the Texas Baroque Ensemble, the SHSU Symphony and the Symphonic Choir is scheduled for the First Baptist Church at 7:30 p.m. April 20.
Dance Spectrum will present Spring Dances on the University Theatre Center Mainstage Theatre April 30 and May 1.
SMALL BUSINESS SEMINARS
The SHSU Small Business Development Center has scheduled several business seminars, including sessions on starting a business, using grants for employee training, getting into the import/export business, and income tax tips."First Step to Starting Your Own Business" is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 15. There is no fee. Experts will cover how to register with the county and state to comply with regulations, identify specific taxing requirements, predict cash flow and obtain capital, marketing skills and other basic business operations.
"Employee Training with Smart Jobs Fund Grants" is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 22, also with no fee. The Smart Jobs Fund program, in which employers decide what training is needed in their work force, will be covered.
On-the-job training, ISO 9000, management/supervisory, manufacturing, and computer-based training are examples of training eligible to be funded by Smart Jobs Fund grants.
"Getting Started with Importing and Exporting" is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Jan. 29, with no fee. Participants will learn the basics of importing and exporting, including evaluation of a company's product and export potential, analysis and research of export markets, distribution networks, and the logistics of exporting.
"Filing Your Company's Income Tax Return" is scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 5, with a $10 fee. Participants will discuss and have questions answered concerning tax forms, schedules, procedures and deadlines. Information will also be supplied on Tax Schedules C and SE, Form 4562/Depreciation, business expenses and deductions for a home office.

DEATH NOTIFICATION, GENEALOGY COURSES OFFERED
The Office of Continuing Education and Correctional Management Institute of Texas have announced the scheduling of courses on death notification, genealogy, and food handling.The death notification seminar was developed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and is supported by the U. S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime. It is based on the personal experiences of thousands of survivors, and targets professionals in law enforcement, medicine, nursing, mortuary science, EMT/paramedic programs, psychology, social work, pastoral care, trauma care and victim advocacy.
It is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24 in the Criminal Justice Center. The course cost is $15 and registration will be limited. Call Dan Beto at 409-294-1675 or Nancy Gustafson at 409-294-1687 for more information.
The genealogy course is scheduled March 26 through April 30. Sessions are scheduled each Thursday. Registration is $70 plus the cost of the course textbook.
