Plans Completed for March 2 Activities

The events will commemorate Texas Independence Day, General Sam Houston's birthday (March 2, 1793), Texas Flag Day and Walker County Pioneer Day.

Activities begin with refreshments at the Gibbs-Powell House, 11th St. and Ave. M, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A ceremony and speech will follow at the Sam Houston grave site and memorial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Luncheon is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum's Walker Education Center, 19th St. and Ave. N.

The observance will move at 2:30 p.m. to the Sam Houston Statue and Visitors Center, Hwy. 75 south, concluding with birthday cake and a Toast to Texas.

Music Events

Fairbanks will perform at 4 p. m. Sunday in the Recital Hall, assisted by Robert Brewer on piano and harpsichord and Tamara Raatz on clarinet.

Their selections will include "Sonata in d minor" by Frederick the Great, "Sonate" by Jindrich Feld, "Developing Hues" by Cynthia Folio, and "Sonata in A Major" by Cesar Franck.

Kempter will be assisted by faculty members David Fleming on piano and Peggy DeMers on horn and music student Doris Longoria on cello. They will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Recital Hall.

Selections for their concert include "Sonata No. 4" by Antonio Vivaldi," "Three Songs for Marlboro" by David Amram, "Andante Cantabile" from his "String Quartet, Op. 11" by Piotor Ilyitch Tchaikovsky, and "Sonata in d minor, Op. 40" by Dimitri Shostakovich.

Kempter will be joined for the Tchaikovsky piece by his students who make up the SHSU Violoncello Ensemble.

Admission to music events is free to Friends of Music, students, $3 for senior citizens, and $5 for general admission. Call 294-1360 for more information.

Writing Workshop Offered

Bexley's presentation is part of the university's Writing-Across-the-Curriculum program.

Bexley is the author of three professional books and many business and professional articles. He has taught at a number of universities and is a frequent lecturer for banking and financial organizations.

Bexley's program is scheduled for 2 - 3:30 p.m. in Room 312 of the Lowman Student Center.
