Children's Literature FestivalThe Department of Library Science at Sam Houston State University is hosting its 16th Annual Children's Literature Festival for librarians and educators on Saturday, March 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.Workshops are planned on a variety of topics, with autographing sessions and book exhibits on the program as well. Authors Berthe Amoss, Tony Johnston, Steven Kellogg and Peggy Rathmann are scheduled to speak. The festival cost is $60. Museum Volunteers PartyA party to welcome new and to thank veteran Huntsville Memorial Museum volunteers is scheduled from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the museum's Walker Education Center.Museum officials invite anyone interested in working with children and adults in the museum's historical and educational settings to attend the party. State Senator to Speak at LuncheonState Senator Steve Ogden will speak on "Higher Education Issues in the Texas Senate" at a March 4 luncheon sponsored by the Sam Houston State University chapter of the Texas Association of College Teachers (TACT).Reservations for the luncheon, which begins at 11:30 a.m. in Room 312 of the Lowman Student Center, are due by Feb. 25. The luncheon cost is $7.15. Those who would like to attend but not have lunch are welcome. The speech is scheduled to begin at noon. Bilingual Education Scholarships AvailableAwards for the 1998 fall semester are available to undergraduate students pursuing a bachelor's degree in bilingual education at Sam Houston State University.The awards provide partial payment for tuition/fees, course textbooks and a monthly stipend, and are offered through SHSU's Project UpBEATT (United Program for Bilingual Educators as Teachers and Trainers). The project is funded by the U. S. Department of Education's Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Languages Affairs. SHSU collaborates with the Aldine, Conroe and Cypress Fairbanks school districts to provide students practical experience as a paraprofessional or volunteer tutor while attending college full time. Degree Application DeadlinePatricia Currie, associate registrar, has announced that Sam Houston State University students who anticipate graduating on Aug. 15, 1998, should file degree applications by March 6.Contact the Registrar's Office in White Hall.
