Wind Ensemble To Perform Road Program

The Huntsville performance will preview work scheduled for a three-day tour of high schools in the Houston, Austin and Bryan/College Station areas.

The concert, under the direction of Donald Ryder, will begin with Paul Hindemith's "March from Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber," followed by composer Percy Grainger's "Colonial Song." Horn soloist Peggy DeMers will perform "Morceau De Concert, op. 94" by Camille Saint-Saens, with accompaniment by the wind ensemble.

The ethnic percussive sounds of contemporary composer Christopher Rouse will be featured in the work "Ku-Ka-Illimoku," performed by student percussionists under the direction of Alec Warren. Instruments to be used include log drums, bongos, boobams, a ringing metal plate and a wooden plank.

The Faculty Brass Quintet will take the stage for "The Yellow Rose of Texas Variations." Using the song dear to the heart of many Texans, the audience will be treated to a display of impressive technical variations based on the tune. Following this, the full Wind Ensemble will present "La Fiesta Mexicana" by H. Owen Reed.

In keeping with the concert's festive atmosphere, saxophone soloist Scott Plugge will perform "The Carnival of Venice" with the ensemble. Closing the concert will be the rip-roaring "Rolling Thunder," a circus march by Henry Fillmore.

Juried Art Show Opens Thursday

An opening reception is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. Thursday.

Kuspit is a professor of art history and philosophy at State University of New York at Stony Brook, and professor-at-large at Cornell University.

He is a contributing editor for "Artforum," "New Art Examiner," and "Sculpture" magazines. His latest book is "Idiosyncratic Identities: Artists at the End of the Avant-Garde."

Awards of $1,000, $500, and $300 are offered for 1st through 3rd in the competition, as well as the John Kerr Smither Family Purchase Award.

Opera Coach to Present Recital, Hold Classes

Kelly and Robert Best of the SHSU Music Department will present a recital of vocal music at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the SHSU Recital Hall, 17th St. at Ave. J.

Best and Kelly first performed as a team 16 years ago when they were sophomores at Arizona State University, and were selected to attend the International Festival of the Art Song in 1989.

The program's first half will feature songs from two of the greatest German lied composers--Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms. After intermission the concert will consist of songs by American composers Charles Ives and Stephen Foster.

Other appearances by Kelly, all of which are open to anyone who would like to observe, will include a master class on operatic repertoire featuring SHSU vocal students at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Recital Hall.

On Friday Kelly will conduct a question/answer session on the operatic world and opera apprentice programs.

Career Services Schedules Job Fairs

A Summer Camp/Summer Job Fair, Teacher Job Fair, and Business and Government Job Fair have all been scheduled by the Sam Houston State University Office of Career Services.

Approximately 25 companies will be represented at the Summer Camp/Summer Job Fair from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23. Representatives are expected from Splashtown USA, Conroe Parks and Recreation, YMCA campus and several local summer camp facilities and others.

More than 100 school districts are expected for the Teacher Job Fair from 1 - 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 3.

"The Teacher Job Fair, held each semester, routinely produces very favorable results for SHSU students and alumni," said Blake Dicke, student public relations assistant in Career Services.

Representatives from various accounting firms, sheriff's departments, marketing firms and military branches will be on hand on Thursday, April 9, from noon to 4 p.m. in the Johnson Coliseum, for the Business and Government Career Fair.

Southwest Horn Workshop Scheduled

All horn players and enthusiasts are invited to the workshop sponsored by SHSU and the International Horn Society. The event will benefit professional players and teachers, students and amateurs.

The two-day event will include master classes (informal public lessons) for both pre-college and college students, a high school and college level solo competition, lecture/demonstration clinics, horn choir, regional artist recitals, and the solo recital by Hatfield.

Hatfield's former positions include 23 years as principal horn of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, adjunct professor and chair of the Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion Division of the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, and member of the Cincinnati Quintet.

Math Workshops

TASP is the state-mandated test that provides information on a potential college student's reading, mathematics and writing skills, and which must be passed before a student is allowed to accumulate more than nine semester hours of credit.

Linda Wright, mathematics lecturer, will present a workshop on "Solving Quadratic Equations" at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Michael Barstow, a Learning Assistance Center math tutor, will present a program on "Interpreting Graphs" at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

April Kmiec, Learning Assistance Center math tutor, will present "Word Problems" at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Learning Assistance Center officials said that Wednesday is the deadline for applying for the next TASP test, to be given at six locations throughout Texas on Saturday (Feb. 28). Call (512) 927-5398 for registration and information.

Figures from the SHSU Office of the Registrar showed a count of 6,381 female students and 5,017 males.
