Public Invited to Bush Speech

SHSU President Bobby K. Marks will present President Bush with the Sam Houston Humanitarian Award, which was established to honor the 200th Birthday (March 2, 1993) of Texas hero Sam Houston.

Previous recipients of the honor were former Secretary of State James Baker and Lech Walesa, former president of the Republic of Poland.

Marks said that one of the purposes of the Distinguished Lecturer Series is to provide area citizens as well as university students, faculty, and employees with the opportunity to hear distinguished public leaders in person.

"The university encourages everyone interested in government and the kinds of issues that President Bush is uniquely qualified to discuss to attend this important event," said Marks.

The Good, the Bad, the Operatic

The opera workshops, slated for 7:30 p.m., will be conducted by Mary Kay Lake, director of operatic studies at SHSU.

On both evenings the musical menu will feature scenes from five famous operas:

• "Sidelio," by Ludwig von Beethoven;

• "Old Man and the Thief," by Gian Carlo Menotti;

• "Hansel und Gretel," by Englebert Humperdinck;

• "Dialogues of the Carmelites," by Francis Poulenc; and

• "Tartuffe," by Kirke Mechem.

The Dance Theater is located in Academic Building 3, next to the Estill Building parking area on 20th Street. Admission is free for SHSU students and Friends of Music pass holders and $5 for the general public. For ticket information contact the SHSU music department at (409) 294-1360.

SHSU Chemist to do Research in Germany

White is the first SHSU faculty member selected for the prestigious DAAD program.

White will hold the rank of visiting professor at the University of Wurzburg, while he does research in organic photochemistry. He plans to travel to Germany about May 15 and return August 15.

"My biggest problem right now is to find an apartment so that when I arrive, I will have a place to stay and be able to begin my work," said White. "My wife and family will also join me, which works out well since this summer is our 25th anniversary."

White also thanked Hugh Meredith, professor in the foreign languages program, who has held several exchange teaching positions and is an enthusiastic supporter of the cross-cultural benefits of exchange-type activities.

"Dr. Meredith allowed me to sit in on four semesters of German, encouraged me to apply, and helped me fill out the application forms," said White.

Chorale and Concert Choir to Perform

Featured in the Concert Choir's performance will be the "Missa Kenya" (Kenyan Mass), a contemporary work for choir, horn, piano and percussion by American composer Paul Basler. The mass is highly rhythmic and joyous in spirit, reflecting the musical forms of Kenya, where the composer was living when the work was written.

Peggy DeMers is the featured hornist, joined by fellow faculty members Lynn Bull, piano, and Alec Warren, percussion. Wayne Barrett is the director of the Concert Choir.

The SHSU Chorale, under the leadership of Brian Miller, SHSU's director of choral activities, will be presenting works by the Spanish Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria, and works by 19th century Austrian composer Anton Bruckner.

The choral music of Bruckner is the subject of Miller's doctoral dissertation.

Henry Howey and other SHSU faculty members will also be playing selections of Bruckner's music for brass.

"The concert promises to be a colorful and varied musical evening, with music that everyone will enjoy," said Miller. "Our students have worked extremely hard, and we hope that the public will join us for what we believe will be an exciting event."

SHSU to Participate in National Teleconference

The two broadcast sites will be the Criminal Justice Center's Kerper Courtroom and Room 313 of the Teacher Education Center. Seating in the education center will be limited to about 25, with seating for 100 available in the courtroom.

The conference will feature two nationally-respected specialists on the subject area, as well as a panel of distinguished educators.

The presentation will feature Charles Glassic, senior associate and interim past president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and David Imig, chief executive officer of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

Glassic is also lead author of "Scholarship Assessed: A Special Report on Faculty Evaluation."

Seventh Annual Family and Consumer Sciences Week

"We invite students, alumni, colleagues and friends to participate in all activities," said Bettye Weatherall, who chairs the department.

Events planned include a poster competition on Monday, with participation from each professional organization of the department, with alumni serving as judges and winners announced at the spring banquet.

On Tuesday there will be a student rally, and on Wednesday a panel of former students will present a discussion on traditional and non-traditional careers in the field. The banquet is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Chamber of Commerce, with the public invited.

The cost of the banquet is $9 per person. The banquet ticket reservation deadline is Monday. Call 294-1242 for information.

The week's activities will conclude with an Evaluation Day on Thursday.

Symphonic Band to Present Thursday Concert

The 60-member group, under the direction of J. Robert Spence, is comprised of students who represent a wide range of academic interests.

The evening's performance will include works by McDougall, Vaughan Williams, Dello Joio, J. S. Bach, Fucik and Arnold.

University Buyer Group Collecting Funds

"Our mission is to purchase one or more youth projects exhibited by a son, daughter, or grandchild of a Sam Houston State University employee," said Jamie Batten, one of the group organizers.

"We are there to show Huntsville-Walker County that Sam Houston State University tries to contribute back to the community in the same way the community contributes to the university."

The group is seeking to raise at least $5,000, having raised $6,500 in 1996 and $4,600 in 1997. The Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Conroe contributed $1,000 to the 1997 project.

The group is also asking faculty and employees to notify them of sons, daughters, or grandchildren who will be participating in this year's show.
