Legendary NFL Referee to Speak at SHSU

Cashion, owner of the Anco Corporation insurance company, refereed for 25 years in the NFL before retiring at the end of the 1996 season. He became well known after NFL referees were outfitted with microphones, primarily because of his drawling "first down" call.

Cashion's visit was arranged by Brad Bauer, assistant director for recreational activities, who teaches the officiating course. Cashion's presentation is scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Health and Kinesiology Building Room 240.

Bauer said that anyone interested in learning more about officiating, or who just wants to hear some good NFL war stories, is invited to attend Cashion's presentation.

Scott Bickel Scholarship Created

Bickel, a 1992 graduate of Copperas Cove High School, was a Sam Houston State University student and worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice when he died in a car accident.

"His family and friends, wishing to commemorate his love of life and his dedication to helping others, are establishing this scholarship to assist other Sam Houston students who, like Scott, are working as corrections officers with TDCJ while pursuing goals in higher education," according to the endowed scholarship agreement.

The first $500 scholarship will be awarded prior to the 1998 fall semester, with the goal of eventually offering two $500 scholarships per year as endowment funds accumulate.

Eligible students must be full or part-time, majoring in any discipline, and working as a corrections officer for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Applicants should contact the Office of Academic Affairs, (409) 294-1001, for information.

Melissa Renee Sinclair Scholarship Created

"Melissa Renee Sinclair was an enthusiastic Criminal Justice major whose desire was to work with troubled youths," according to the endowed scholarship agreement. "The tragic accident that claimed her life represents a great loss not only to her family, but to a field sorely in need of the kind of dedication and spirit she exemplified."

Donors plan to award an annual $1,000 scholarship, contingent upon earnings of the endowment, with the initial award to be announced in the 1998 spring semester for use in the fall.

Students eligible for the award should be criminal justice majors with 72-80 semester hours completed, be working his/her way through college, and have an overall grade point average of at least 2.25.

Applicants must submit a one-page essay on how receiving the scholarship will help them attain their educational goals. The scholarship selection committee will use financial need and demonstrated desire to obtain an education as overriding criteria.

Week's Events Include 'Saturday at Sam'

Stephanie Lewis will give a graduate voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Recital Hall. Kelly Sharp will also give a graduate voice recital, at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Recital Hall.

The SHSU Symphony will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Killinger Auditorium.

"Saturday at Sam" will include a general welcome and orientation, campus tours, sessions with representatives from all academic areas, financial aid advice, residence halls open house, lunch at Cafe Belvin ($4), and an organizations fair with door prizes.

SHSU High in Hispanic Degrees

Figures include bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

Notification of the ranking came from Jose Lopez-Isa, publisher of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education magazine. The listing will be published in the magazine's April 24th issue, entitled "The Best Colleges for Hispanics."

Data for the listing was provide by the National Center for Education Statistics, which is a part of the U. S. Department of Education.

SHSU Receives Women's Leadership Award

The award was sponsored by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education's (AACTE) Committee on Women's Issues.

"In receiving this award, Sam Houston State University's submission was recognized for their broad range of relevant activities interwoven throughout the program," according to an AACTE news release. "The level of commitment to gender equity and the development of leadership among women at the institution was quite impressive."

The award recognizes extraordinary accomplishment in advancing issues, program and innovations related to leadership development and/or gender equity in education, the release said. The program selected serves as a model for others in the profession forwarding the agenda for women, it said.

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education is a national, voluntary association of colleges and universities with undergraduate or graduate programs to prepare professional educators.
