Prison Folk Art, an exhibition of folk art done by prisoners, runs through April 23 in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is no admission fee.

"This second annual exhibition of Texas folk art focuses on individuals whose incarceration strongly tempers their view of life," said Darrell Patrick, gallery curator. "Their direct and unpredictable statements respond to the elemental urge to create, not so much for a public but to give form to inner needs and visions."

Approximately 30 pieces, on loan from private collectors, will be displayed.

Patrick said that the works range from toilet paper sculpture, match stick art, ball-point on envelopes to folded paper, as well as traditional media.

Parenting Satire Opens

The play, written by Christopher Durang and directed by Richard Amiss, a senior Theatre student, traces the journey of John (Jeremy Shouldis) and Helen (Alison Wright) as they cope with lifestyle changes brought about by the birth of their first child, Daisy. The story follows them through Daisy's ascent to adulthood.

Other cast members are Trey Huguley and Maggie Wilhite, freshmen theatre majors; and Ashlee Parker, a junior musical theatre major. Set design is by Laura Penuel, a senior theatre major, and costume design is by Joanne Dooley, a senior musical theatre major. Larry Routh, technical director for the SHSU Department of Theatre and Dance, designed the lighting for the production.

"Baby with the Bathwater" runs nightly at 8 p.m. through Saturday. Additionally a 2 p.m. matinee will be staged Saturday.

SpeakEasies Golf Tourney

The format will be an 18-hole, 3-person scramble, and will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Admission fee is $25, which covers greens fees, tournament entry and prizes.

Individual trophies will be awarded to first, second and third place teams, and for longest drive and closest-to-the-hole contests.

The tournament benefits the SHSU speech communication majors and minors organization scholarship fund. Anyone interested in sponsoring or entering the tournament should call Terry Thibodeaux, speech program coordinator, at (409) 294-1336 during business hours.

Advisement/Registration

James Goodwin, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and coordinator of the mandatory advisement program, said that there are three categories of students who must be advised before they can register for future classes.

The categories include students who are new to SHSU and who have not yet established a grade point average, students with a grade point average below 2.5, and students who have not completed Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) requirements.

Goodwin said that such students should contact their adviser, whose name, office location, and telephone number are printed on transcripts, and not wait until the last minute to do so.

He said that the purpose of the mandatory advisement program is to improve retention rates, to provide assistance to students who may need it, and to offer students the opportunity to meet with an adviser concerning which courses they should be taking to meet degree requirements.

Students will register according to their classification, with graduates, post graduates and seniors on April 8, juniors on April 9, sophomores April 13, and freshmen April 14. Open registration is April 15 and 16.

Not for Everyone

Mitchell J. Muesham, of the Center for Business and Economic Development, will discuss "Quantitative Literacy in Business: Is There a Symbol Phobia?" at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Room 418 of the Lee Drain Building.

"We invite anyone interested to come hear about Mitch's view of quantitative literacy and the fear of mathematical symbols," said Greg Foley, associate professor of mathematics. "A lively discussion should ensue."
